Question:
I WAS DENIED! WHAT DO I DO NOW?

I have Blue Cross/Blue shield of alabama. they go through Intracorp for approval. I just found out that i was denied. I have not had a regular physician until lately, becuase i just couldnt afford it and just now started to get lots of health problems. I was denied because i did not have 2 professionally directed weight loss programs lasting for 26 weeks in the last 12 months, with monthly weigh ins. I don't know what to do. I dont feel like i can wait another year for the surgery. My health is starting to slowly get worse. I am so depressed now and dont know what to do. What do i need to do now?    — sandyh (posted on May 7, 2003)

First of all, don't give up. Send an appeal along with a diet history. Show them that you have attempted weight-loss for the pat 5 years through diets, pills, exercise, etc...anything!! Even if they weren't doctor-supervised. explain that you couldn't seek professional supervision due to financial reasons. Some insurance companies have a rule-of-thumb not to accept until after the 1st or 2nd appeal. The most important thing is not to give up. Pray to God and He will be on your side. I wish you the best of luck !!!

To add to what Laura said, document EVERY diet you've ever been on; show them a history that goes back for years. Next thing, get your doctor to start a bi-weekly or monthly weigh-in and diet consult ASAP. Also, go to the "Insurers" link here at ObesityHelp.com and look up BC/BS for Alabama. The reports you read there will help to give you an idea of what you're up against. Finally, do not lose hope! Good luck & best wishes!

Hi there, I agree with the previous poster, don't give up! Submit your own diet history with ANY type of proof you can come up with, receipts, paperwork from joining something, etc. Is your PCP behind you? If so, I would ask them to write you a compelling letter to the insurance company (you say your health is getting worse) stating that the condition of your health will not improve through two 26-week diet programs and that the surgery is medically necessary right NOW due to your worsening health. Good luck!

Check into your policy. I'm having the surgery 7/1 in NY. So due to meeting others and being a lawyer I got into fighting these things. 100% success so far on exclusions in NY and other states. Email me if you need some advice. Thats always free. BEst of luck
