Question:
I had Gastric Bypass Surgery in 1999 would surgery be possible again?

I had Gastric Bypass Surgery in 1999 and shortly after became pregnant. I lost 100+ lbs in the first year or so but then started to put the weight back on since the surgery and a total of 3 children later. What I would like to know is would having surgery again be possible for me, or should I just try something else?    — Penny C. (posted on August 16, 2005)

Contacting your surgeon would be your best answer to that question. I'm sure that if something is broken, then that could be fixed, but what exactly could they do 'again', if it's not broken? Each person and each WLS is different, I would get in touch with your surgeon. :) Rebecca

I ATTENDED CHURCH 7 YEARS AGO WITH A GIRL THAT HAD THE SURGERY 2'S SHE SAID SHE GAINED HER WEIGHT BACK AFTER EATING JUNK ALL THE TIME. THE SECOND TIME SHE LOST IT AGAIN ALSO. I VISITED HER CHURCH TWO MONTHS AGO AND SHE HAS GAINED A LOT OF THE WEIGHT BACK AGAIN. this will be her 3rd time for surgery. I don't get it on that one , what I went through after my WLS was enough to keep me on track all I have to do is reminise a bit and I eat my protein, I also eat anything I want including my pepsi, and my sweets but just a little of each. I wish you the best always

It is possible to have a second gastric bypass if your first operation failed. Chances are, in 1999, your pouch was not transected from the remnant stomach which often leads to staple line disruption (where a channel develops that allows food to enter into the remnant diminishing any feeling of fullness). Also, there is a good chance that your pouch was probably more than 1 oz. (which is about standard now). We have had several patients in our support groups who have had surgical revisions-- they have all learned from their past mistakes and are doing well.

Hi you might want to find a copy of the pouch rules and see if you can get back on track following those rules. Also you should be checked for a mechanical reason for your surgery failure. From what I understand sometimes there can be a stapline disruption or the stoma can stretch with RNY. There are several options available for revision of the RNY or as a conversion to the DS. If you'd like to read more about the revision options to the DS please go to www.duodenalswitch.com or join us on the DS forum here on OH. Many of the DS surgeons are also experts in revisions and they can be found on the DS website. I wish you the best.

Yes you can have another GBP surgery alot depends on the surgery u have already had does it need to be revised is there a problem that maybe you just need fixed to go back to losing weight there are different things that yor surgeon can check and different ways to check them Upper GI with small bowel follow through EGD (endoscopy) these are tools that the surgeon I work for uses to check the pouch as well for other problems....check with your and see what he/she has to say.....you may just need a whole new surgery with new technology involved like I said it all depends on the type u have had
