Question:
Is Medicaid an HMO or a PPO?

Sorry if it's a dumb question, but I really don't know, and when I call the 1-800 # for medicaid, they tell me there is no member service area. My caseworker don't know squat either.    — Moma V. (posted on April 28, 2002)

Medicaid is its own thing. There is not a network of doctors like an HMO. And they dont pay like a PPO. If you had to lump them into a catagory they would best fit in the HMO catagory, but they are not an HMO. You just have to call around to see if the doctor will accept medicaid.

Is the 800 number you are calling going to the federal government or to your state government. You should be able to get answers to your questions from your state government. Medicaid is a federal program, but each state is able to make its own rules. Make sure you are contacting your state's medicaid program for answers.

Thanks for the answers and advice. I will call the 1-800# again tommorrow. I am having a feeling it was government not state as the guy on the phone didn't have much of a clue about what was where in the state. Like city's and such.
