Question:
Would anyone like to purchase a group policy together?

Several of us on this site have insurance with exclusions or no insurance at all and would like to purchase a policy as group. Can anyone out there help? Thanks!    — Stephanie S. (posted on February 7, 2001)

I don't know if I can help or not but I am interested in getting a private policy. Seems to me to get a group policy set up we need to set up some sort of entity with a Tax ID etc.. some kind of a business etc.. I don't know if that is necessarily true but I would think that is how it has to start.

Maybe it could be as simple as an internet research company. No one has ever said that a company can't offer its part time employees insurance right?

Yes the company coudl be just that.. we will have to come up w/ the funding to licence it etc.. I think the best bet is to start looking for an insurance policy that offeres coverage all over the US and covers this surgery. Then find out how large/small the groups can be to get this.. and what is needed to prove the business etc.. licence ro what? Then its on to meet that requirment and then off to get people who are willing to do this. We will have to get price quotes and see if its affordable.

I am very interested in getting together with you people and finding out about a group health insurance policy that cover WLS. It's such a sorry situation to think that those of us without health insurance aren't even able to buy a personal health ins. plan because we are morbidly obese and can't have the surgery to get us to a "normal" weight! It's a catch 22!! I would help research our options-Let's get this done together!!

My employers health insurance won't cover any form of treatment for obesity. I enrolled in the Blue Cross of Ca. Level III plan only to have my $1002 premium check returned a couple of days later with a note that they don't offer this plan any more. If you can find a way to get a group plan going, I'm in. You can reach me at [email protected]

I am an insurance agent, and want you to know that most states will prohibit the formation of a group for the purpose of buying insurance. The group must exist separately and independently of the need to buy insurance. I live in Michigan and it's the same in a lot of states, for the simple reason that there is no underwriting on group insurance (meaning they take everyone) and it's less costly. Good luck to all of you - I hope it works - but you'll need at least 10 members of your group, and you'll have to find a group that has a serious reason to be in existence in the first place. It seems like being morbidly obese would be enough of a reason to form a group with like-minded people, but I doubt that it'll fly. Good luck to you all anyway!

I'm in. Could we form as a non-profit WLS advisory company? I could check with my cousin, an attorney who's been trying to help me with my appeal................Rose
