Question:
If you have the surgery will you still be able to have children?

I was wondering if you could still have children after the surgery, and will the surgery make you have complications?    — Tammi C. (posted on July 27, 2002)

WLS and the big loss helps fertility and turns on many. Post ops are healthier and this reflects into easier pregancies. Me and Jren both post ops are looking forward to this. Jen was unable to get pregnant because of PCOS/ My surgeon suggests waiting till a year after surgery to get pregnant.

Absolutely! Infertility is often eliminated, high blood pressure is often eliminated, etc...I downloaded a really great article on the very subject. The only prob is that I don't remember where I got it. You could use a search engine to hunt for it if you're interested. Pregnancy Following Gastric Bypass for Morbid Obesity by Alan Wittgrove,MD,Leslie Jester, CRNP, Perri Wittgrove, MD, and G. Wesley Clark, MD. Department of surgery and obstetrics and gynecology Alvarado Hospital and Med. Center, San Diego, CA. Hope this helps your research.

My daughter had her lap RNY 01/04/00, lost 210 lbs., and had a gorgeous baby girl (7lb. 10 oz.) just three weeks ago. When she found out she was pregnant, she contacted our bariatric surgeon to see if there were any problems that he would anticipate. He contacted her obstetrician, and recommended that she double her prenatal vitamins and have her labs checked every two months during the pregnancy.....otherwise she should expect to have a completely normal and healthy pregnancy. Her labs were actually better during the pregnancy, than before! She and baby are wonderful. Good luck!
