Question:
Doctor disapproval

Today I went to my new pcp and was explaining my history to him and was telling him how my other pcp really didn't approve of the wls and he said he wouldn't of either.. My question is, why?? He told me that down the road I could have irratable bowel syndrome, adhesions, severve stomach pains and malabsoption.. I knew there were complications, but now he has me fearing getting older and what problems may be ahead for me.. Anyone who has a comment please share!! Thanks!!    — Kimberly B. Don't be discouraged, this site is full of people who perservered and got their referral. Prepare all your history's - medical and diet. I am going in with a lot of printed pages from this site for my PCP (next week) and hope she agrees. There is also a site for an attorney that does work specially for surgery turndowns obesitylaw.com good luck and hang in there!!

Yes, don't be discouraged! While I don't have a pcp, as I'm on disability and consequently, Medicare is my primary insurer, and they don't require a pcp - anyway, my regular family doctor was totally against it until I loaded up on information mostly from this site, and I also became very informed verbally, talked with him about the surgery site and how professional it is, that now, when we discuss it - he acts as though it were his idea!! The last time I saw him he said, "now when are you having that surgery?" "I'm really glad you decided to go ahead with it!" What? So, keep after them!

I did not go through my PCP. I called my surgeon personally. My BMI was about the same as yours so I knew my PCP would not approve of me having WLS. Find out if the surgeon you would like to see requires a referral from a PCP, all don't. Good luck to you.

Hi Kim: Here's the important thing: What do YOU think of the fact that you have had wls? Are you happy that you did it? Remember, there is a lot of ignorance in this world, and it's not limited to people who are not educated. How much have you lost now? Email me, I miss hearing from you! Jaye Carl, open proximal RNY by Dr. Greenbaum, the same doctor who did Kim's surgery, on 7-29-99. 88 pounds gone forever!

All the information your PCP gave you is true. I had surgery 7/29/99, on 12/20/99 I went to ER thinking it was a bad case of the flu, but my husband said it sounds like you have an obstruction. It turns out I had adhesions. The adhesion attached itself to the small bowel and again attached itself to another part of the small bowel, the intestine then twisted and I was in trouble. It was nothing by mouth for 5 days. The Chief of Surgery said he wanted to wait to see if the obstruction would pass, it did not. I required surgery. Now would I change anything that I have done????????? NO ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!! I am down 100 lbs, and find I physically feel better. I also upon occasion have the dumping, but that is usually when I don't eat right. Either to much sugar or fat. I still do vomit occasionally, but still a small price to pay. So far, doc says I am healthy and not suffering any malnutrition. My husband had the bypass 14 years ago, and his only problem is that he suffers dumping syndrome. He has maintained his weight loss for over 10 years. His lab work shows that he is not suffering any malnutrion either. It is a personal choice to have WLS, and the ONLY ONE who can decide that is YOU!! I wish you the best of luck.

Hi Kim, I am still waiting surgery my self. My date is February 7th. Open roux-en-y, Thank God when I went to my pcp, he had had 10 other patients who have been through this. He is supporting me, and also told me the risks. But if I don't loose weight , I could be dead soon from a heart attack. So my choice is the surgery as all other means have failed for me. I hope I will be sucessful with this tool. Now , I find it hard to answer you because I don't remember your history. I'm sorry forgetful I guess. If I knew if you were post op or not and the date, that would help. If I knew what kind of surgery that would help. I am thinking if you are post-op and like your pcp for all other matters, may be it is time to educate him. Ask him to check out this sight and others and give him the links so it is easy. Also there are from many Bariatric Hospitals, information, pamphlets to help educate the ignorant Doctors on the courtesys, Procedures, of dealing with the Morbidly obeses person. NOTICE I said PERSON, because most of this is Fat predjudice. I would like to ring the neck of Doctors and nurses that subject us to their unkind predjudice, but alas I can't , But together we can spread the word and educate them. Some one always has to pave the way for the rest to follow. What ever you decide I hope my humble opinions are of some value. Like I said, I have not had the surgery yet, but have done much research over the last 3 yrs. preparing. ( including education.) You have my thoughts and prayers.
