Question:
Has anyone had their insurance change while actually still in the hospital?

My insurance has approved my open RNY for November 29. Our policy with them ends November 30 and they only approved the hospital for one day with a review on November 30 if further stay is required. December 1 my new insurance will be Empire Blue Cross EPO. I asked Human Resources if the new insurance would pick up the hospital charges and she asked the Blue Cross rep. He said there shouldn't be a problem - however, she is supposed to give me a phone number so I can verify this information. She was out ill all this week and I still don't have any verification. I will only have Monday and Tuesday of next week because my surgery is being out of town and I must leave early Wednesday morning to get all the pre-op tests done. If anyone has had this happen to them, please let me know what happened with your insurance. Patty    — Patty_Butler (posted on November 23, 2001)

I had a problem something like urs but not exactly, but the answer i will give might help. You should ask ur new insurance about " Continuity of Treatment" If u are in the middle of receiving specific treatment from a dr or facility that is not covered by the new insurance this continuity of treatment will allow the treatment to go on uninterrupted and paid. No one gave this info freely to me I had to dig and dig and talk to more than one rep. i finally got a form for my dr to fill out and send back to the new company. just ask if this is available to you. the las thing u want is to get ur bill and find out you are responsible for all the treatment you received after the 29th. good luck BB

It's been awhile since I was on the claims end of insurance business, but it used to be that if you are an inpatient and a new carrier {ins. co.} takes over your group the old co. is liable for the expenses. However, reading the prior responses of two people with the continuity of treatment phrase, I would suggest you call your customer service # on your ID card and ask them what will take place with your benefits as you will be an inpatient on the date the company changes insurance carriers.
