Has anyone had gastric bypass surgery after having the Nissen fundoplication surgery

Frances, I had my fundo done back in 99 and 8/04 had my rny. The doc did my procedure open (had to do it this way to undo the wrap & said he wanted to make sure he did miss anything). Said when he got in there, the wrap was almost undone on it's own. Will be 7 months out the middle of March for my rny and am down 79 pounds. I did not have any complications because of the fundo wrap and then going onto the rny. My surgeon says that docs are even looking into having the rny done on people because of the severe problems with reflux/gerd! Wish they did that for people back when I had my fundo done. Oh well. If you have any other questions, please email me. Take care and good luck to you.

Hi Frances, I have a friend who had a Nissen at the time of her VBG. That surgery failed, and she ended up being converted to a BPD/DS - which was very successfully done. She's at goal, and has a wonderful quality of life. Be sure to compare all of the surgeries, talk to folks who have had the same types of issues you do, and ask lots of questions about post-op quality of life. You might want to check out http://www.gr-ds.com/generalinformation/comparison.html Blessings, dina

Thank God, Someone is answering this question.. I have Nissans Fundoplacation performed in 1998 and I am now schedule for the bi-pass RNY surgery, April 5th.. My Doctor is going to try Lap. I know this is a double surgery, I am wondering how long the hospital stay is? I have been feeling a little panicy..If any one has had these same procedures performed please keep in touch.. Edna

It is my understanding that having a prior Nissan fundoplication is an excellent reason for having a duodenal switch, rather than an RNYGB. See this (split) decision by the California Dept. of Managed Health Care, in which a patient won her case for getting the DS instead of the RNY: wp.dmhc.ca.gov/imr/detail.asp?id=4024&optFormat=html&cboDetermination=0&cmdSearch=Search&cboMC=Morbid+Obesity&cboTreatment2=0&cboDiagnosis2=0&cboDT=0&cboType=0&txtDetails=switch

I had the Nissen done in 1999 and then Open RNY 6/21/01. My surgeon decided to do the surgery as an open procedure because it is more involved when they "take down" the Nissen. No complications, surgery and recovery went great and still no heartburn/GERD 4-1/2 years later. I say go for it but it is preferable that your surgeon has done a Nissen take down before, not a good idea to be his first test case. Good luck!

You are probably not going to like my post, but I wish someone would have been honest with me prior to my surgery. I had a Nissen in 1999 and my OPEN RNY on Oct. 20, 2004. I had MANY complications: The wrap was very secure when he got in there and ended up nicking my spleen and had to remove it due to severe bleeding. HE also nicked my pancreas and it caused a lot of severe pain afterwards. I had an abcess, a leak, 4 strictures and just 2 days ago got my G-tube (feeding tube) out. I am sure it depends upon the expertise of your surgeon. I was in surgery for over 6 hours. It was supposed to be 1 1/2 - 2 hours. I would ask a lot of questions of your surgeon prior to surgery. I wish you luck, but I just wanted to be honest with you. My surgeon's nurse told me one day that they were thinking about taking me off their website, but I told her then, that people need to know it's not all a piece of cake. She reluctantly agreed. Good luck.......

Hi there, My DH had a Nissen Fundoplication done to repair aparaesophageal hernia in the early middle 1990'2. Then in 1998 he had another paraesophageal hernia repair. Then Jan 11, 2005 he had a gastrectomy/roux n y anastamosis and ventral hernia repair. The surgeon removed most of his stomach completely and created a small pouch for his stomach like the regular RNY. DH has lost 50lbs so far. he was admitted top the hospital today though because a CT scan done this afternoon showed fluid in there and they put in a drain and started antibiotics. We don't know that it is infected yet, the drainage really looks okay to me but they want to be careful and there was a lot of it there. My DH's surgeon did not leave drains in after the initial surgery. My surgeon did and his drainage looks the same as the drainage I had and my drainage was okay. Anyway yes it can be done but you should have a surgeon who is very experienced with this type of thing. My surgeon sent DH to the medical college because he was so complicated. Good luck.
