Is it common for the surgeon to have the patient of an open RNY wear elastic stockings during and after surgery to prevent blood clots. If so, how long do you wear these stockings?    — Michael K. (posted on January 4, 2003)

Yes-not only common-but it is the "expected standard of care"--if not the elastic stockings than the automatic inflatable ones applied in the OR for use while in the hospital. The general rule of thumb is the stockings stay on in the hospital until you are up and out walking the hallways 3x a day. Some MDs may even discharge their patients with them for the first few days home to help prevent venous pooling in the lower limbs risking clot formation.

My surgeon has his patients use the electric pumps....the constant inflating and deflating makes sleeping really difficult, and I had them until I was up and moving most of the time. It really is in your best interest to have the stockings or the pumps.

Hi Michael, yup I had to waer them. Infact I wore both them AND the SCD's ( the blow ups) It was ok except it made me hot wearing so much. TED hose or SCD's are pretty much standard for anyone who has surgery. At least it is in the hospital where I work. I wore the SCD's for 3 days and the TED hose till I left. Best to you!

Hi... they put thigh high-type tights on me right before surgery and I had them on for several hours while I was tilted with my feet downward right after surgery. They removed them while I was in the hospital. They are not constricting enough to be uncomfortable. They also keep your legs warm and become less noticeable with wear. Not clots... so I guess they worked...by the way, the surgery works too....-60 lbs.... YeaH!

YES we were elastic stocking and had boots onour legs that infalted and deflated keeping the circulation going. I was told that it was to deter blood clots.

Yes, this is to minimizing the chances of blood clots. You want theses. Everyone I know of that has has surgery, regardless of what type, has these on until they are up and moving on a regular basis. I also had the blow up (blood pressure like) legs things also.

Hi there, Michael! I had to wear those stockings. Even when I had jaw surgery a few years back, I woke up with them on my legs. I wore them until I was getting out of bed more than I was staying in bed, I think about the 3rd day. It wasn't so bad, just hot. Vi open RNY 9/23/02 down 80 lbs

I also had to wear both the stockings while in hospital and had inflatable during surgery. In fact, I brought the stockings home and when my legs were really hurting, I put them on so I could sleep at night (I have had bad leg pain for several years).
