Like many of the heavy people i know, i have been heavy all my life. I am now 34 and at 375 lbs. much heavier than i ever thought i would "let myself get". I have 2 children and my 9 yr old son is already 35 pounds overweight. I decided to set a good example to save him and me. I hope this operation is the right tool towards the weight loss. I had a laproscopic roux-n-y on last wed, july 11 and just came home today.
7/18 I'ts been a week since the operation and I am amazed by how well and quick my recovery is. I walked a half hour today around my neighborhood and the pain around my tiny stiches was barely noticable. I enjoy experimenting with the different soft foods that i am allowed. Honestly, most of this food is new to me. Let's face it, cottage cheese, yogurt and cream of wheat were not staples of my previous diet, but i am enjoying the journey.
I'm amazed at how my clothes are already hanging off of me. I put on my suit today which was quite tight last week and I needed a belt to hold my pants up. My jacket is so big now that when i button it I look like a bum in someone elses clothes. And it's only been one week! On Friday I go to the Dr so I'll get weighed. I can't wait to see what the scale says.
7/20 Oh My god!!! I went to the doctor today for my first followup. Its been 9 days since the operation and i lost 28 lbs!!!!! Thats just amazing. I have no pain, I'm not throwing up anything, and i feel awesome !!! I walk 30 minutes a day, sometimes more. Exercise is a huge key, especially if you can go outside and get fresh air. It feeds every cell with goodness. Anyway, that's just the way I feel, I guess. I get weighed in again in 3 weeks - I can't wait to see what happens.
7/23 I am already eating more normal foods - today we had a family reunion bbq and i had a tiny piece of turkey (which I chewed into oblivion, finely cut salad, beet salad, a small piece of bread, melon for dessert and decaf coffee. Honestly, I could'nt eat that much, I think I had maybe 5 or 6 small mouthfuls and was stuffed, and, like I said, I chewed and chewed like a blender. I loved it all. Everything tastes so much better now, too. Apple sauce tastes great, and the melon I had was either the sweetest melon I have ever tasted or my tastebuds are just more alive than they have ever been.
7/25 I am doing awesome and loving every minute of my new life. I hardly think about food and hardly get hungry. Its a miracle!! Food used to control me totally. I tried on some old clothes today, 2 sizes smaller than a month ago and they are not even tight!! I can't believe it. My face has realy thinned down and I look like I am comming out of a cacoon. Thank you, Dr. Garber, you are my saviour!!!!!! 'Till next time.
8/27 I went to Dr Garber for my second month follow-up and I lost 60 lbs!!!!!!!! I just can't believe it. I am waring clothes from 2 and 3 years ago, and I feel great. I also had a visit to my primary MD and had my blood tests done. Everything looks good except for my cholesterol which is still high at 260. However, it used to be consistently closer to 300 and after all I still have 120 lbs to go to my goal of 180 lbs.
10/7/2002 Well, It's been more than a year since my last posting because life just got busy and you know how it is. However, I have only good things to report. I have lost 130 lbs in the past year and I would call that a miracle. I still want to lose more and I am working on it by exercising but I am very happy with the fact that i have a very normal life at this point - no vomiting, no stomach cramps, no extra gas, no overeating, no guilt. Instead, I have more self esteem, more love of myself, more admiration from peers, more confidance (as you can tell...) more health, more sex with my wife, more sports with my 10 and 5 yrs old kids, more raquetball every thursday morning, more rides on rollercoasters which i couldn't fit into before...
I have gotten lots of calls and emails from people looking to have the surgery and I have told them all that i have no regrets at all. I was scared before my surgery, no doubt about it, but thanks to all those who had it before and reassured me I am now in this great position to recommend it to others based on my awesome results.
I do, however, caution these people that if they are considering the surgery they should only consider the laproscopic procedure. i have heard only horror stories and painful experiences from people who had the open incision surgery. Why bother with it if you can have the laproscopic operation and be back to normal life in two weeks or less.
Till next time!!! Steve.

Surgeon: Shawn Garber
Dr Garber is an icon in my area because he is the only one performing laproscopic roux-n-y on Long Island NY. He was personally trained by Carnie Wilson's Dr. in LA and was featured together with them acouple of weeks ago on the Montel tv talk-show
His office assistant Donna is very helpful and friendly. The first time I met with them I immediately got a sense of his confidence and felt very comfortable making the choice to have the operation if he would perform it laproscopically
He told me about the risks of the surgery and put my mind at ease by indicating that the lap procedure was less traumatic then open surgery
I went to a few support meetings where i met many of his patiants and learned from speakers about nutrition, plastic surgery

Truth is that Dr Garber's office took care of filing and getting approval for me.
