Hi my name is pam. Ihave been overweight all my life. I'm not a spring chicken anymore but I am a grandmother of 5 and believe me they can sure run you ragged. I began looking into bypass surgery 2 years ago when my daughter suggested it. I have degenartive disc disease in my back,I.m a very severe asthmatic, and I was at a point of not even being able to get on with the activities of daily living.
I decided it was time to take back my life. After my PCP set up an appointment with Mayo clinic for me I began to worry that they would say I was to old or find some reason not to do it but my appointment was with the most wonderfull surgeon. He feels everyone deserves quality of life. I was set up for all the pre-op testing in Oct 99 This was all done in a 2 day period and I returned to the Dr. the next week at that time he sent all the info to my ins. co. Within 2 weeks this came back approved and he called and said I was scheduled for surgery on Nov 8-99
On the 8th of Nov I check into the hosp. I even made it all the way to pre-op when I begin to have a major asthma atack and they did not like the way my breathing was so they decide to postpone. I have never been so dissappointed. They sent me home with a new date which is Nov 24-99. Now I'm petrified something is going to go wrong again. I don't think I can make it through another dry run. This is hard for me since I really don't have anyone to talk to about it. I have done alot of searching for info on the web and do feel it is the right thing to do but would still like someone to talk to to get over that fear hump. Or should I say since the 24th gets closer yes I'm petrified.I am having an open RNY at St.Marys in Rochester MN. I sure would like to hear from some of you out there. Thanks Pam
Surgeon Info:
My surgeon is Dr. Michael Sarr from the Mayo Clinic. He is a very wonderfull person very considerate and cares alot about his patients. He believes in a very closly monitored after care program of 1 to 5 years. He did discuss the risks of the surgery withme and was very concerned when I had my problem in pre-op. He did come to me right away. I must say I do trust his surgical competence.
