I am 32 years old, single and been overweight most of my life. I am hoping/want my life to change!!!!

3/21/02 - I have never wanted something so bad in my life. I know God is watching over me. Thankfully everyone in my life has been so very supportive. I think honesty with yourself is the most important factor. We all need to come to realization that we are powerless where food is concerned and that we need help.

4/26/02 - I had surgery on 4/9! I never thought that day would ever come. The staff at UCLA Santa Monica was absolutely wonderful. Having never been in the hospital I can say it was almost a pleasant experience. I arrived at the hospital around 8:30 am and did not get into the the operating room until 12:00 pm. I was very nervous and a little teary. (By the way I was having a Lap RNY.) I got on the operating table and everyone said hello to me and the next thing I remember was waking up in the operating room. I got to the recovery room and was in a lot of pain. The nurse was wonderful. She gave me everything she could and when that didn't work she brought my surgeon and anestheologist in and told them they needed to do something to relieve my pain. I was in recovery 3 1/2 hours. I was brought up to my room and pretty much slept until 10:00 when a nurse's aid came in and gave me a bath. (That woman was a saint. Her name is Marian and if you get her you are a lucky person!)
At that point my pain was undercontrol and I slept off and on for the rest of the night. The next day I got up and walked and pretty much slept on & off. Thursday morning at 6:00am the resident came and said I could go home. I had quite using my morphine pump that night. Dr.Liu came to see me every morning!
I went home and pretty much worked on getting my water in and drinking my protein drinks (YUCK!) I came back to work on Monday, April 22. I have been working full days except for yesterday when I went back to UCLA for a post-op check up. Dr. Liu is very happy with my progress except I am not getting enough protein. He switched me to a pureed diet and I think that should help! So far I have lost 21 pounds. I am exhausted every day. But...I wouldn't change a thing!!!!!

5/10/02 - Yesterday I was One-Month Post Op. How do I feel...I feel great! Food is definately an issue. I still think I should be eating more. I know thats just my head talking to me. My clothes are not fitting and for once that's a good thing! As of this morning I weigh 245 lbs! Haven't weighed that in 1 1/2 years!

8/8/02 - Sorry I haven't posted in quite awhile! Things are going great. At least now they are! I was suffering from some depression about 2 1/2 months post op and it was kicking my butt. I had my doctor prescibe an anti-depressant and it seems to have helped the situation. I currently weigh 210. WOW! I have lost a total of 75 pounds. I can't believe it. Tomorrow will be 4 months since surgery. I have gone from a size 24 shirt to a 14 and in pants I was wearing a 26 and now am in a 20 (as long as they have some stretch to them!). I have also gone down a 1/2 a shoe size. My rings need to be re-sized as well. I am having quite a bit of hair loss and have cut my shoulder length hair to a short cut. Food is still an issue but I am trying to quit beating myself up about it. I am coming to the realization that no matter what I do I will never be able to eat the amount I was eating before surgery. Don't get me's not that I am "cheating" but I have the guilts about certain carbs. Like crackers and rice. I can only eat a couple of small bites of rice but still feel like I am doing something wrong. I saw a friend of mine yesterday for the first time in 6 months. He was absolutely amazed at the weight loss. His reaction was exactly what I needed! Good luck to everyone!

5/20/03 - I can not believe it! Over a year since my surgery. I am currently weighing in at 168. Not really where I want to be but no complaints from me! My life has changed in so many ways. I can't even begin to count the many ways. I am dating again. No one special but definately feel like I am back in the "game"!!!

    Surgeon Info:
Surgeon: Carson D. Liu, MD FACS
Dr.Liu is wonderful. I have utter faith in him. At my consultation he was very through and explained everything in great detail. The office is extremely busy and there is quite a bit of a wait for an appointment but hang in there he's worth it! I plan to have the surgery Laproscopicly and Dr. Liu currently is the only surgeon at UCLA offering this option.
    Insurer Info:
    Blue Cross, HMO
I never had to deal with the insurance company. My PCP and Dr. Liu's office handled everything. Blue Cross has been good. They are even covering the therapist I am seeing.
