I am just plain tired of the yo yo effect of dieting. I have battled this for 20 years. Now,my Sciatic nerve is so severe that I cannot exercise! Decided that now is the time, before it is too late. It took a lot of thought and a whole lot of prayer, to come to this decision. But here I am and I'm, raring to go! I have a beautiful 11 yr. old granddaughter and a 33 yr old daughter with Multiple Sclerosis. They both need me to be here for them. My hubby needs me to be here for the Golden years, and YES, I want to be here with them. I am currently undergoing pool therapy three times aweek and intend to keep this up until I can physically, without so much pain, exercise in the regular gym.Praise God, the trainer at the gym has allowed me to purchase some very high power protein powder from him, and I am eating as little as possible. Based on the surgery, it will seem like I am gorging myself now. Weight is being stubborn, without exercise, who knows! Thank God I came from a good home, with no abuse and no psychological hang ups to deal with, just smoking. Figure I would lose the weight and then concentrate on that! Let all my friends and family know of my decision, and most of them think I am crazy! They just do not understand that this is not about beauty, but about health!

I have my surgical consult date, Dec. 20 and all of my preop testing that day and the next! I am so excited! Found a friend here on OH, and we are hoping to get our surgeries done on the same day, so we can support each other. Since I could not find any doctors in Arkansas who would do the surgery on a Medicare patient, I will be going to Edmond, Ok to have it done. Would have preferred Little Rock, but that is the way the cookie crumbles. Getting my consult was really easy, the hard part was setting everything up in a 2 day span, back to back, so that travel would be minimized. But, The staff came through with flying colors! Thanks to all of the postings here(OH)I got all of my medical records from the last 8 years, lab results, xray and MRI results, sleep apnea study,PCP referral letter, plus letters from my Urologist, Pain Control Clinic,Dr. who did my EGD that show the GERD and Hiatal Hernia, and my neurologist.Had my past diet attempts/failures already typed up, so I was basically approved, by the office, prior to the consult. Getting all of these records is what generally takes so long for the surgeon's office, not to add so MANY manhours. SO I am ready to go!
It will be interesting to see the Dr's reaction to an older (almost 56) patient who has dark purple hair that is spiked, nose piercing, tongue piercing, 4 piercings in on ear and a tatoo. I just tell everyone that I turned 55 and went through the PUNK ROCK stage! They all hope I do not regress any further! My (12 yr. old) granddaughter loves it, everyone in school knows who HER grandma is!
Many, many thanks go out this board and web site! Without all of you, I do not know if I would have been so excited about this surgery. My SIS is very upset with me. She hates the idea of surgery if it is not life-threatening. She outweighs me by about 150 LBS. and does not see the life-threatening side of it, or should I say, REFUSES to see it. But, because of all the info here and the wonderful posts, I am absolutely positive that this is my answer to my problem! Thank you again!
Will update after my consult and when I have my surgery date!Oh and by the way, the name PATTICAKE - have you ever played patticake with a baby, it is always fun and brings a smile to your face, so that is why the name!

My consult went GREAT! Dr. Floyd and his staff are all so nice. Dr. Floyd is really nice and I was real impressed with him. He told me that he will fix anything while he has me open. I had asked him about my small Hiatal Hernia, and he said that it would be stupid to leave anything wrong if he has me open. He also took special care to assure me that HE WILL TAKE CARE OF ME! All I have to do now is get pass the Pulmonologist, that visit is scheduled for Jan. 5th. and I think it will go ok. I am EXCITED, but still a little leery. I know that this will be good for me, but not too sure about the emotional ups and downs. My family has been through enough without me going all emotional on them. BUT, I will deal with that when and IF it happens.
I HAVE AN ANGEL: STALKER VAL!! YEAH!!!!

WOWEEEE!! I met the most wonderful doctor, Dr. Cole in Edmond, Ok. He is a pulmonologist and a terrific guy! He told me that my lungs are in pretty bad shape, figured as much!, but that he feels that I can HAVE the surgery with a couple of precautions in place. Just hoping that Dr. FLoyd agrees to these! He also put me on two new meds and I could actually feel the difference immediately. I really, really liked this man. Hubby has requested that I continue with him every three months or so, even though it is a 6 hr drive, because I really liked him, he is aggressive and does not beat around the bush. So, just waiting to hear if Dr. FLoyd thinks it is ok, and we can proceed with surgery on the 26th. What will be, will be!
Well, The Pulmomologist said NO! Am I upset, weeping and wringing my hands? NOT ON YOUR LIFE! I am so thankful for the Doctor's who decided that my lungs were not in good enough shape for this major surgery. It shows me alot. 1. The patient's condition is more important than the money, 2. Hey, they are conservative, 3. WOW, a set of doctor's who really care about people! I am so THANKFUL for these guys who put my health above anything else. They gave me another chance. I can redo the PFT's in a month, they prefer two, and if they are good, then it will be a go. IF you think think this was a wake up call, YOU ARE RIGHT! Again, I am not mad or weepy or anything but THANKFUL. THANK YOU DR. FLoyd, Dr. Cole, you are such a nice man! The ball is now in my court and I intend to take it and run with it. If my lungs do not clear up, then I will still be me, and ALIVE! If they do then it will be surgery again. Until then, I am gonna blow up lots of baloons and get with the respiratory techs here to see what they can give me to help me build up the functions. As i close in PRAYER, THANK YOU LORD for watching over me with such tender loving care and for sending me some REALLY FANTASTIC DOCTORS!
Well, another bad diagnosis. I went to see the rheumatologist today and not only do I have Osteoarthritis but FIBROMYALGIA. And she said it is pretty bad, so this gives me another reason for wanting this surgery so bad.
I know that the weight loss will not have any bearing on the disease but certainly will on my ability to get around.AND, I have osteoporosis, so I am now another med. and must make suer that I take my calcium, Taking the calcium is ok, cause I need to take that anyway after the surgery. Brother, some days it does not pay to get out of bed, or atleast answer the phone!

WOW, what a month this has been! My daughter and I took a trip over to Ft, Worth, Tx to visit some very dear friends and attend a healing conference at their church. IT WAS AWESOME! Well, the Lord put it on us that we neded to be in that church on a full time basis. So we asked my hubby, via cell phone to please pray for God to give him an answer as to where we should move(we already have our house on the market). Well, my daughter and I got home and hubby wanted to go down the very next weekend to visit and see our friend in a little theater production. Well, the Lord spoke to him in the church service and told him the very same thing, and my daughter and I had not voiced our opinions to him at all. AWESOME LORD! So, we immediately started the process of job hunting for him, and came back home. Hubby placed a cuople of phone calls during the week and a prospective employer asked that he come down for a face to face interview. So, here we go again to Ft. Worth! Hubby met with the employer who seemed to be pleasxed with hubby's experience, gave him an application and asked him to please fill it out and include any certifications, etc, resume and mail it back.So we started house hunting. We found the most awesome house. So we came back to Arkansas.Got hoe on Sun and I loaded my girls (daughter and grandaughter)back up and off to Ft. Worth we went the very next day.I really wanted them to be ok with the area, house etc.THEY BOTH are ecstatic! Cnn you tell there is some major excitememnt going on in my household! We got home this am at 2:30. This mor ning the final approval for my surgery came through! So I am off to Edmond, Ok on Tues. for surgery on Wed.PHEW, I have been so busy I can hardly get my breath! The Lord has HEALED us! We all were so unhappy where we are and he is herding us at a fast pace to exactly wehre he wants us to be. Well, everyone pray that this job will come through! For now, I am off to wake up the girls, it is noon, get them dressed and off to town we go for pre-op work and to take the kids bowling. PRAISE GOD for all you do in our lives!
Future Update WELL, Here it is February 22, 2006, and how my world has changed! My surgery was a cinch, except for a few set backs, not surgery related but DUMB AR doctor's. My surgeon was GREAT and so was the experience. I went through a few months where I truly wondered if I had been jinxed, very slow eight loss and medical problems, but it was all worth it. At one month shy of a year, I have lost 123 pounds and gone from a 24/26 to a sixe 12. Wish I had taken my measurments before but did not. I am wearing clothes right off the shelf in any store and loving every minute of it. When I run into people who have not seen me for months, they do not recognize me, my own brother had not seen me since Oct and thought My husband was with a strange woman! What a feeling! At my age, 57,I have even been hit on by strangers. Hubby is loving that! He says it makes him feel really good! He is such a doll! Anyway, there are still ups and downs, I sometimes can only take a couple of bites and I am full, and sometimes I still get irritated when I am eating and my head says I am hungry but my tummy says FULL. Have not ventured into the sugars yet, and really do not intend to do that. I actually ate my first donut last week and have not wanted another. This surgery has been SSSSOOOOOO wonderful for me. I really do recommend it for anyone who has an obesity problem. Dr. Floyd in Edmond, Ok is the BEST! If anyone has any questions or doubts, please just email me, I would be happy to answer any questions.
I AM ONE HAPPY PERSON!

Surgeon Info:
Surgeon: Philip Floyd, M.D.
Wonderful man, down to earth, compassionate and easy to talk to. Understands his patients and truly cares.
Insurer Info:
Medicare
Medicare does NOT pre-approve anything! I have met all of their qualifications, and have the medical records, reports, studies, referrals, etc. IN HAND!
Would recommend to anyone with Medicare, that they first gather together all of the information needed. DO NOT leave this step up to your surgeon's office. They do not have the time to do this for you and are more apt to turn you down. Take the iniative on yourself! This also shows the surgeon that you are VERY serious and not just wasting his time.
