I have Type 1 Diabetes and wear an insulin pump. I have tried dieting so often but the insulin keeps me continually hungry and other aches and pains prevent me from exercising as much as I would like. (I have shin splints when just walking fast, osteoarthritis in right hand, lower back pain). Just got info from job stating that the PPO plan for next year will approve bariatric surgery w/ bmi over 35 and another co-morbidity (i.e. diabetes). Have thought about it in the past and trying to find out if I am really a candidate.

01/11/05 - I went to my first appointment with Dr. Jawad on 1/4/05. What a long day!!! I did not meet him but we spent most of the day listening to all the details of the surgery, complications, asking questions, etc. from his physician's assistant, Sylvia. I had the nutritional consultation and Sylvia called me back on Friday to let me know that Dr. Jawad would do the surgery. I had the psych evaluation done and the H-Pylori blood test and on the 17th, I have my gallbladder ultrasound. I am waiting for the psychologist to write and fax the letter to the doctor and I called there today to see if they had received it, but got no callback yet. I will try again tomorrow when I have the day off, so I can call every hour on the hour until I find out...haha!! I am worried that I do not have enough physical proof of prior attempts at dieting, exercise, etc. None of my doctor's took any notes when I talked with them about the ways I was trying to lose weight!!! I am trying to get copies of bank statements just to prove I went to Curves for a whole year!!! I can't even find a phone number for Weight Watchers and of course, there is no proof that I bought all those different kinds of diet pills and diet books, etc. I guess I could just bring in all my books, my Weight Watchers supplies, my Curves gymbag, my half empty bottles of diet pills and drop them all on the doctor's desk!!! I will see what else they need tomorrow.

1/12/05 - Found out today that the pyschologist has been sick and has not had a chance to write up the evaluation letter yet. I don't mean to be insensitive, but it's been a week already, geez!! Just kidding...anyway, hope she feels better soon, for her sake and mine!! I faxed over a letter today stating how many different ways I have attempted to lose weight with dates and amount lost, etc. I also got proof from Curves that I went there for a year. I can't wait until I know for sure. I watched a show on tv about a 17 yr old kid who just had wls. When I think about it too much, I do get scared.

2/4/05 - Waiting to hear from doctor's office and insurance company now. My paperwork was submitted on 1/20/05, but I found out yesterday that they made a mistake and originally denied me based on it being a covered exclusion. They admit they were wrong and have now sent it back through again. I just heard that they may need more info from me or my doctor. I hope it is not what I think it is because I was afraid that I did not have enough medical info regarding prior weight loss efforts. None of my doctors ever wrote down any thing stating that I was doing South Beach or Atkins or Weight Watchers or Curves even though I told them every time I went to visit them. Every single visit, I asked for help in losing weight and they ignored me!!! Now it may cost me more time in getting approved for this surgery and I am fuming right now!!! Okay, calm down, girl. God knew this would happen and he has a plan and God plans much better than man, so trust him. Okay, the smoke is not billowing from my ears anymore..haha. Anyway, I'll check back in soon. If anyone is in the same situation, please email me. I need someone to commiserate with....

3/2/05 - Okay, I got approved after the insurance company first looked at the wrong file and denied me. Then they said they never got the pyschological evaluation and denied me. Then they finally approved me. However, because my surgeon only goes to my in network hospital once a month, I am not scheduled for surgery until June 13th. It seems like forever away and I need to do more research on what I will be able to eat and what vitamins I will need, etc. I don't feel like I am getting enough info from the doctor's office. I should spend more time on here, but everyone has a different opinion. I just want the doctor to tell me what to do, exactly what to do.

    Surgeon Info:
    Surgeon: Muhammad A. Jawad, M.D.
I had my surgery on 5/16/05. Everything went well, but because of my complete dislike for pain, I ended up back in the hospital the same day I was discharged for pain management. Dr. Jawad did not hesitate to tell me to check back into the hospital so they could take care of me. Dr. Jawad is very concise and to the point, but he is very knowledgeable and highly respected in his field. I trust him because of his reputation and because of his religious beliefs. His staff is friendly, but you have to become a pain in the you know what to make sure that things get done. Don't worry about it, just do it. Call them everyday if you have to. You are their customer! I would like to have seen Dr. Jawad more often, but I know he is a very busy man and there are many other people he must give lives back to. I appreciate everything he has done for me and I look forward to a long wonderful relationship with him as my doctor. These are just my personal experiences with the doctor and in no way reflect how your experience may turn out.
    Insurer Info:
AIG Choice Plus PPO through United Healthcare, PPO
I have switched to AIG PPO from Aetna HMO b/c they have advised that if someone has a bmi between 35 and 40 and has diabetes, they will approve bariatric surgery. Have not applied for approval yet, b/c I still have to have my first visit with Dr. Jawad.
