Hi. I am a 51 year old woman. I have been happily married for over 25 years to a great guy. I have had a weight issue since I was 8 years old. I have been investigating WLS since March of this year, 2002. I never considered it b4 this. I have read 50-60 sites on the internet, and find this one to be the most informative, and helpful. I am waiting for my insurance to give the okay for surgery, but I am confident that this will be done without too much trouble. I look forward to participating with the rest of the world in a healthier state!
I am having the surgery, lap RNY on September 19,2002. My husband is giving me the money to have the surgery, but we are still trying to get the insurance coverage. The Insurance company wants 12 months of documented, doctors supervised weight loss attempt. I don't have this. I have no reason to wait out a year of trying. If I could have been on a successful diet for 12 months, I wouldn't need this surgery.
Officially denied today August 16th. Faxed in my appeal letter, and started writing my next letter. Cried a bit, but pulled myself out of it and decided that no matter what, I am going through with this surgery, I just would not like to be in debt to do so!
Post Op. Surgery was three hours due to adhesions. Excellent care from the moment I walked into the hospital. Home resting, and happy to be here.
Continue Post op
I was approved for my surgery 4 months after I had the surgery. The insurance company helped me work out the arrangements with the surgeon and the hospital so that I was reimbursed for about 1/2 of my total costs.
My surgery was completely successful. My starting weight day of surgery was 251 lbs. I was a size 24/26, or a 3X. Today I am at 158 lbs. I wear a size 12 comfortably.
The entire experience has been an emotional and physical high for me. I never expected to fail. I never expected to be sick and uncomfortable. I was sick a few times, but that was in the very beginning, and when I ate too fast or completely forgot to chew.
Today, 18 months after surgery, I can eat almost anything I want. I eat alot less. I concentrate on protein, and water. I never forget to take my vitamins daily. I work out 2-3 times a week weight training and cardio training. I attend simi weekly support group meetings to remind me that I am not and never will be cured from my obesity illness. I am working towards a goal of 150 lbs, and I hope to attain it eventually.
I am very fortunate to have had this site to look at and I am happy to help others on their journey. Good luck to you all.

Surgeon Info:
Surgeon: Michael Jay Nusbaum
Dr. Nusbaum and his staff are very professional and warm. I have made several phone calls, and was never made to feel anything other than important to them all. I felt that all my questions were answered completely, and in language that was completely understandable. Aftercare is important, as well as the family and friends support. A nutritionist is counciling befor and after. I understand the risks and they were all addressed carefully.
