2004

I had my first consultation with Dr Farhan on June 4, 2003. It's been a long wait with Pysc testing, Sleep study, Scope test, H Pylori positive with treatment to follow. In September I started with ulcers on my legs and received treatment at the wound clinic off and on through the end of February. Finally, on April 14, I had my pre admission testing with surgery coming on May 11, 2004.

I have my husband, four children and spouses, and eleven grandchildren. I love them all very much.

I retired because of my health in January, 2003. I've had a bad back for 30 years. I fell in 1999 and hurt my knees. My knees were my downfall. I've been sitting most of the time ever since.
My asthma has gotten worse since I've been home. And obviously I'm hoping this surgery will help me have a new healthier life. It's kind of my last hope. If I can lose this weight, maybe the Doctors will find out if my leg and back problems are correctable.

It's been almost seven months now since the surgery. Have lost 116 lbs. My health has improved so much, it's unbelievable. No longer use a cane. Getting around is so much easier. Actually used a ladder last week. I am so happy and thankful that God has given me another chance. Dr. Farhan and Dr Wagner were such wonderful surgeons. The staff at Hurleys are all so super.

2005

5/29/05

I've passed the year mark. I have lost 150 lbs. It's wonderful to feel so good. I really do have a new lease on life and am thankful to God for the improved health. I only regret not taking this step many years ago. I can now keep up with our twelve grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Just love spending time with them.

2006

3-28-2006

I had two hernias repaired and eleven pounds of excess skin removed on 3-23-2006 by Dr. Abd Alghanem at Hurley Hospital. Am hoping the weight loss will start again; have been told that when people have their hernias repaired, the weight loss starts again.
Am glad to be this far. This year has been so painful. Looking forward to better days.

    Surgeon Info:
    Surgeon: Jamal Farhan, M.D.
Dr Farhan seemed to be a very knowledgeable and capably Surgeon when I first met him. This impression has not changed. Dr Wagner assisted him; both Doctors visited me throughout my stay at Hurley. Their office staff are very caring and find answers to all of your questions. Hurley gave us a lot of literature upon returning home. If you weren't sure about something, the people at Hurley were readily available to assist you with advice. Dr Farhan did tell me of the risks of surgery; but I was blessed and breezed right through the different stages without any serious problems. I would definitely go to Dr Farhan again. I was very pleased with his competent and professional manner.
    Insurer Info:
    Blue Cross - Federal, PPO
I've never had trouble with them before. Gastric Bypass is covered but not to be connected with obesity. They do not pay for any benefits with a diagnosis of obesity. I talked with them several months before surgery and they told me I would pay $100.00 plus my co-pay. While having my pre-surgical physical, I was looking at my Insurance Card and on the back it said that if my hospital stay wasn't precertified, I might have to pay $500.00 additional. I called my insurance to see if I had been precertified. They said no; and that the hospital had to do that (not me). I called Hurley and asked to talk to the office that does the precertifications. The girl that worked on that was out of the office but she would call me back on Monday. She did call me back on Monday. I told her my concerns. That my surgery was to be on Wednesday; and should I postphone the surgery. She said I should not worry; that I did not need to be precertified; that they deal with this all the time and they know what needs to be precertified. I should trust her, that she knows what shes talking about. I said okay. I was a nervous wreck waiting so long for surgery that no way did I want to cancel two days before surgery. To make a long story short, it is almost seven months since surgery. There is about $46,000.00 not paid for of which about $6,000.00 is for the surgeons. 2/28/05 Update........The insurance has paid their portion of the surgeons. This month they finally paid a portion of the hospital bill. The insurance says that my portion of the hospital bill is $100.00. It only took nine months to get this far. Update.........They finally paid the hospital also. Don't know why everything took so long or whose fault it was that things got goofed up; but it sure caused a lot of anxious moments and worry.
