Today is January 19th and I have been doing hard research about this surgery for over a month now. I have been thinking about about it for over six months, after seeing quite a few people that have had it done. I've been doing some hard thinking and I know this is the right course for me. I have tried every diet imaginable, but nothing works. I have an appt. on Monday with my regular dr. to get a referral to a surgeon. I called my insurance to see if they would cover this, and they said if a surgeon within my network did it and if it was medically necessary. My goal this next week is to make that happen. I am basically a healthy person, so that is the only thing that worries me is that they won't find it "necessary." If anyone has any suggestions for me, feel free to email.

I got my referral to the surgeon in my area. I've heard nothing but good things about him, so that makes me feel good. My appt. is on Monday. This weekend, I am working on my list of all the diets I've been on, and all the problems I see physically and emotionally as a result of my weight. I have definately decided I want the surgery, but I'm am so nervous about the insurance approval process. I have United Healthcare, and my husband is with the Operator Engineer union, so I figure with two of them I might have a good chance. I just want to make sure all my ducks are in a row when the initial paperwork get in. I have an aquaintance that had the insurance approve within a month and two weeks after that, had the surgery. So I am imagining in 6 weeks this could be happening for me!

Well, I'VE BEEN APPROVED! My date is April 9th. It took about a month to get the word from my insurance. It was a LONG month, but was well worth it. It was approved right off the bat! I will be having the duodenal switch. I am both excited and nervous. I will keep you posted.

I have my appt. on Mon. (2/5/01). From what I have heard from others here and first hand here locally, he is a great doctor.
Insurer Info:
United Healthcare, Select EPO
I must say that United HealthCare (so far) as been great. I did have to call them a few times to see if my paperwork was in their system yet. It took a month, but that was the way my doctor submitted it (snail mail). The insurance co. would have preferred a phone call, which have made it much faster. But they were very nice to me on the phone when I was bugging them every week. I just hope I get the same service thoughout the procedure. I would recommend this company to anyone. I had no problems whatsoever. With BMI of barely over 40 and no real comorbidities, I got really lucky with this insurance co.
