May, 2004 - Had a physical with my family physician and discussed the prospect of trying to have a gastric bypass. He said that it may help my back pain to loose the extra weight. I ahve tried contless diet over the last 20 years to have temporary success. I also had lower back surgery three years ago and since I was pregnant with my fourth child at the time, it didn't heal correctley, resulting in still having some constant back pain.
June 10 - met with Dr. Schwartz in Grinnel, Ia. He explained the surgery and stated that I would be a good candidate since I am healthy and only have about 110 lbs. to loose. Next, step is to wait for insurance to approve. Dr. Schwartz said he would dictate today and it should be in the mail to the insurance co. in a couple of days.
Two weeks later the insurance co. still hasn't recieved any letter or request for surgery. So called the Surgeon's office and get the run around about how it takes up to 6weeks for them to get the letter to the insurance co.. Why? so long to type and mail a letter is my question? I guess I will keep checking.
So I have kind of made a pest by checking every couple of days with both the insurance co. and the surgeon's office.
June 30 - Finally, got a call that letter was faxed to my insurace co.. So I called insurance co. yes they had recieved it but no update in the computer yet.
June 31 - Called Dakota Care Ins. to see about approval and was told that "surgery was deemed necessary" and approved!!!
Now I have to wait for the letter to be recieved by surgeon's office. It was sent today.
July 6 - I recieved my letter of approval from the insurance co., so I immediately called Surgical Associates to see if they had recieved their copy and since they hadn't yet. I faxed them a copy of mine yet today. Now wait for a nurse to call with my surgery date.
July 10 - Nurse called to schedule my surgery date. 8-11-04 was the earliest opening on the schedule, so she was going to check with Dr. Schwartz to see if he would add another surgery to his schedule to fit me in so that I can be ready to go back to school at the end of Aug..
She called back and I am scheduled for surgery on July 21. Only a week and a half away! Getting excited and nervous!
Getting excited and nervous. My hubby is very nervous! He keeps telling me that I look fine the way I am and that he loves me. What a dear! I love him soo much, but I need to do this for me. I keep telling him that I am mainly doing this in hopes that by loosing weight my back will improve. Getting thin is a wonderful side effect!!
July 15 and 19. - Had pre-op physical and pre-op interview = blood work, chest x-ray, etc.
July 21 - Surgery Day! Went into surgery at 1:00pm and out of recovery and back to room at 4:00pm. Had RNY- open, gallbladder removed and also had a ovarian cyst removed. Because the surgical floor rooms were full, I got a private room in the ICU. NO complications, just got to use the quiet, private room.
July 22 - Rough day! I had trouble with the morphine. Terrible headache and nausea. Tried not using the PCA and taking a Perkocet but couldn't keep it down, so back to the morphine until tomorrow.
July 23 - Feeling great today! Got to take a shower and did that feel gooood. Funny how simple things can make you feel more human again. Some incision pain when moving, but not as bad as I thought it would be. Off the PCA(morphine) and on Darvocet! MUCH better. Up and moving around and started soft foods today. So little fills up the pouch, amazing.
July 24 - Get to go home today! The three hour car ride home went well, luckily I was able to sleep a good part of the ride home. Thankfully, my husband is being very helpful and the kids are spending the next couple of days at grandma & grandpas'.
August 11 - Three weeks post-op and feeling great. Just a little muscle soreness when I overdue. So far most foods are agreeing with me and I have lost 17lbs. Seems to have stalled with weight loss the last week, hopefully will pick up soon. It is hard to get 64 oz of fluids in daily, but getting at least 50oz..
January 21, 2005 - 6mos. I have lost approx. 65 lbs so far and down from a size 22-24 pants to a 14-16. Wow! and down to a Large in tops. It's hard to believe and I am loving wearing different clothes!
I am feeling great, but do wish the wt. would continue to come off a little faster. I have been at about -65lbs. for about 6 weeks now. At times it is easy to get frustrated and at other times I keep telling myself that I never would have lost 65 lbs. in 6 mos. any other way. I would like to go another 30lbs and would be really excited if it would come off by summer. That's all for now, but will try to update sooner next time.
September 19, 2005 It's been a while since the last time I updated. I am now down a total of 92 lbs. and have been holding there for a couple of months. I now weigh 160lbs. and am down to a 10 - 12/14. As with anything it depends on the item and how it runs. Too bad all the clothing makers can't get universal sizing. But that would be too simple. :) Everything is going great. It is so much fun and sometimes hard to get use to, but I do like the compliments. Because when your fat people just don't compliment you as much. I have been lucky in the fact that I don't have much saging skin, except for a little in the upper arm and stomach. I don't know if I will ever be able to afford plastic surgery, but for now it is not a big problem. That's all for now. I will get a new picture up soon.
