I have battled with my weight my entire life. I grew up in the south and ate everything fried in lard. When we moved to the "city" we learned a little more about healthy eating and living. I have tried everything - Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Slim Fast, Atkins, Phen-Fen, Adapex, Meridia, even hypnosis. Nothing works. I am not lazy - I go to the gym 3 times a week. I walk a lot. I am 21 years old and want to live the rest of my life healthy and happy. I have a surgery date scheduled - 10/1/02! I'm very excited.

Surgeon Info:
Surgeon: David Bruce, D.O.
He is very friendly and caring. I'll let you know what I think after surgery! I would definatley recommend the office to anyone interested. They have been wonderful! They are very supportive and answer all my 1000s of questions without being outwardly annoyed. The thing I like least is that I am having surgey in 5 days and feel I should have another appointment with him, but they didn't schedule one. He has given me an aftercare routine and diet. He was thorough in discussing the risks and benefits and did not push one way or another. As of right now, I rate him an 8 (out of 10), but may change my mind after surgery! :) I feel that being surgically competnent is exteremly important - I don't want any moron chopping me open, but bedside manner - explaining things to me and my family - is almost as important.

The company I work for has great insurance - they cover everything but this surgery. It is approved/denied on an individual basis. I didn't really deal with them at all. My surgeon's office manager (Valerie) dealt with them for me, which weas terrific. I think they really wanted to deny my claim because I'm so young. I feel that they feel that weight loss is just over-indulging. (My personal opinion is that may be true in some cases, but I have obesity on both sides of my family and have tried EVERYTHING else.) I think the office staff at the doctor's office probably did a lot of persisting and that's why the insurance company finally agreed. I definately recommend patience! They took 9 weeks to approve my surgery and I called every Monday to check the status, but never answered any questions. They record each call and I'm sure they finally saw I, and my doctor's office, were serious about it, and apporved it.
