Gave everybody hugs goodbye and took pictures. This gym is so supportive of our choice of WLS, most gym people try to talk you out of it.

JULY 18, 2003-OUR SURGERY NOTES: Juan & I arrived at the hospital at 5:45 am. They put us in a pre op waiting room together. Changed into the BIG hospital gowns. We were told that our surgeon Dr. Mary had an emergency surgery so ours has to be backed up to later times. Juan & I just watched TV until they took him to surgery at 11:00 am. From the time my hubby left the room until I went down I was very scared. This was the first time I was freaking out about the surgery, I guess I was so worred about him. I did not go down to the operating room prep area until 3:30 pm. Dr. Mary came over to me and said that she just finished Juan and he did great! WOW what a relif!, then she said that she's taking a lunch and will do my surgery in 1/2 hour. I said go right ahead and take a rest! HA HA. That was so nice of her to let me know about Juan, I finlly calmed down. All the surgery staff came over to me and wished me well, they were so excited that we did this together. I got put to sleep by the nicest Anesthesialogist. When I woke up I was in the hospital room and my roomie was my hubby!! I did not have any pain nor did Juan. We commented about soreness but no real pain. I guess the Moraphine drip was doing it's job! Our nurses got us up a few hours later for the first WALK! The next day 2 of our obesityhelp freinds suprised us with a visit. Anne & John drove from Arizona to see us! The rest of our stay was great. A lot of hospital staff kept coming to our room asking us if we were the famous couple that had WLS together! Spent a lot of time walking around the ward, watched TV and slept. Kathy had problems with the moraphine, and had to have her medication changed 2 times. We got out of the hospital on Tuesday the 22nd of July. Went to the Summerset Suites hotel for the rest of our time in San Diego. We put the DO NOT DISTURB sign on our door as we did not want anybody to bug us. Had our post op appontment with Dr. Mary on Thursday the 24th. She took out Juan's drain tube, boy that sucker was longer than I thought! and our new weight's are 330 for Juan and 260 for Kathy. We went home to San Jose at 5:00 that day. We are glad to be home, I had a suger free popcicle first thing!
UPDATE: As I start my new life I have made a major decision. I will no longer be called Kathy anymore, to me that is the FAT person. I will be using my birth name of Katherine from now on in my life. My mother won't change but it's ok, I understand. My profile will still say Kathy but please call me Katherine.

UPDATE 8/18/03 Today is our one month post op appontment with Dr. Mary in Walnut Creek. She flipped out when she saw us! We feel great and Dr. Mary said we can go back to the gym! Also this was Katherine's first day back to work.
UPDATE 8/24/03 BAD DAY TODAY! I was at the gym walking on the treadmill when I slipped and it threw me off! I could not get up so they called an ambulance. I ended up with a pulled hamstring in my left leg and brused right side and I had many cuts on my hands and legs. NOW I have to wait another 7 days before I can go back to the gym!

UPDATE: 9/16/03 Juan has made it to the Century Club!! Whoppie! 100 pounds down.
UPDATE: 10/18/03 Katherine is finally in the Century Club!

UPDATE: 01/19/04 We had our mesurements taken for the first time since July at the gym today. Juan has lost 26 inches overall and Katherine has lost a whopping 51 inches!
UPDATE: 03/03/04 Today is my moms birthday. Mom said the best presant was that her daughter was healthy and happy! I went clothes shopping last Saturday and got a dress that was size 14! I started crying at Mervyens, sometimes the weight loss is overwelming. Juan is not losing as much but hes gaining a lot of muscle.

Well it's been a while since I posted to this site. We have been so busy with our new life and YES it's a new life. Juan and I have been remodeling our home.
I went to Great America theme park and went on and FIT on every ride! This was extremely emotional for me as the last time I was there 10 years ago I was embarrassed because they could not close the bar on the ride because I was too fat. I cryed on the first ride. I even did the Xtreme Flyer where you are strapped into a harness and hoisted 153 feet above ground, and then dive at speeds up to 60 miles per hour while free-falling 17 stories toward the Earth skimming just six feet above the ground. WOW!
I am now one of the leaders of our support group and enjoying helping other's make the jouney.

Surgeon Info:
Surgeon: Mary Murphy, M.D.
I really liked meeting Dr. Mary! she was very nice to me. Dr. Mary was very excited that I was already drinking the protien, quit the sodas and caffine and was working out at a gym! I don't have to lose anymore weight before surgery but if I do she said that's OK! She won't cancel my surgery. I had a big fear about that. She was thrilled that me and my husband want to have our surgerys together on the same day. She said she would even get us a hospital room together. Dr. Mary went over the surgery with us in great detail, and even though I have been studying WLS for over a year she did tell us new things.
The best thing I could say about Dr. Mary is that she was easy to talk to and really wanted to get to know me and my husband.
Insurer Info:
Kaiser, HMO
My Doctor is the best! she kept bugging them. When she had not heard in January she kept calling them, she finally found out that they lost my paperwork and my husbands that was sent 3 months later. She called me on 3/5/03 to tell me that me and my husband are both approved! Kaiser is great if you have a great docter! But the process is in need of a efficiency expert!
Update: We would like to thank Kaiser for giving us the chance to be reborn! It is so wonderful that a Insurence Company is taking a powerful stand with the Obesity Epademic that is sweeping this country!
