Hi! I have been thinking about having WLS for a couple years. My sister is a physician and talked to me about it last summer, as she had seen some great success with it. I have been overweight since I was a child. I have tried many diets. I am an Emergency room RN and work long (12 hour) busy days. I have hypertension, and severe arthritis among other medical problems. I want to be healthy and be active with my husband and 3 children.
It took several months and a lot of persistance, but finally was approved for surgery. My date is February 28, 2000!!!! I am so happy!
8-10-00 I am doing wonderful. I feel like I have a new life. I have never regretted having the surgery - not even for a second.
12-24-00 It is nearly 10 months since my surgery. I have lost over 100# now and feel fantastic. This is the best Christmas in many years. I wear size 12 clothes and look and feel great!
Surgeon Info:
Surgeon: Donald J Scholten MD
11-11-99 Dr. Scholten is great. He was very straight forward. He did not rush and explained the procedure thoroughly to my husband and me. He offered several times to answer questions.
The staff has been fantastic and are very helpful and friendly. I am waiting for insurance approval and then I will return for pre-op testing. This office wants to help you!

I was denied surgery within 1 week after my PCP sent a letter requesting the surgery. I immediately tried to file a grievance and start the process of fighting. I talked to 6 people in "member services" before I finally got someone to act on their words(3 weeks later) and send me the papers to start the process. My PCP also appealled. I was denied again in December. On the final step on January 17th --they finally overturned the denial. I was all set to take the fight to the State HMO Task Force, but I am glad I did not have to.
You need to keep fighting and not give up!
