I am 30 years old, I am 5 ft 7 inches tall and weight 285 pounds. I have been overweight for the majority of my adult life. As a child I was very thin, even throughout my teenage years I was thin. I have 2 children ages 4 and 2. My children are very small so when others see us together they look in amazement as if to say "How is it that her children are so tiny and petite and she is so overweight". I think that is the most hurtful thing a person can encounter. My children however love me unconditionally, which always seem to make it better. I have 2 aunts that have had this surgery and are doing very well. I am looking forward to being a "LOSER"!
8/02/03..........I am finally a LOSER!!! Surgery was uneventful. I have to admit that I had prepared myself for a near-death experience(LOL) and it WASN'T that bad....I can honestly say that I had more pain having my children. I will continue to pray tht my re overy go just as well. Will keep you updated on my weight loss...........
12/03/03............First, let me apologize for not updating sooner. I have 2 small children and after working 10 hours a day and coming home to take care of them, updating my profile has not been a priority. I would like to thank God for all the prayers and support I have received since I had my surgery.
Just to give you a quick update. I am 4 months post op and I have lost a total of 75 pounds! WOW!!!!! The day of surgery I had actually gotten up to 295 pounds. Today I weighed in at 220 pounds. I have never been as excited about my life as I am now. I have a goal of about 40 more pounds. Which I must admit are the hardest. But it's actually been going o.k. for me. I have only experienced dumping twice. Once when I ate some Pepe's taco and of course on Thanksgiving! Yes, I have experienced my first holiday after surgery and it was actually going o.k. unitl about 10 o'clock that evening. I ate like 2 spoons of dressing and a spoon of macaroni and cheese. Of course I was thirsty behind that, did not wait thirty minutes, drunk a half a cup of o.j and was sick for the remainder of the night. Of course until it all came back up! LOL.....
Other than that I have had no complications. I am just getting used to all the comments I am receiving. I must admit if I had to do this all over again, I would in a heartbeat. Through this experience I have gained a really good friend whom I met am the doctor's office and we actually ended up having our surgeries a week apart. And one of my lifelong friends (who I tried to get her to do this with me) has decided to have the surgery after seeing all the success I have had. She has an appointment with Dr. Denham after the new year comes in.
So all in all I must say life is grand! I am a loser! And I love living!
Hospital Reviews(Chicago, IL) - Northwestern Memorial Hospital
Surgeon Info:
Surgeon: Ervin Denham III, M.D.
Dr. Denham seems to be a very nice man. My first impression of him was a very good one. I have encountered other patients that have had some sort of contact with him and they all seem to be positive about him. The office staff is very friendly and personable, that's what I like the most. We have become on a first name basis. Their total program at Northwestern is the best that I have encountered, and I have had two experiences with two different doctors.
Insurer Info:
blue cross, ppo
My insurance is the best by far. I had originally been approved for the surgery by a different doctor(this only took a week to get approved). I then decided to go with another doctor that I felt more comfortable with. They were very understanding about me changing my mind and offerred all there assistance with the change of doctors.
