In Loving Memory of Jeannie Colter "JC"

It is with profound sadness that we share with you that we have lost a dear member of our OH family this weekend. Jeannie Colter, known affectionately to many of us as "JC", was resting comfortably at home on Sunday afternoon, April 20, when she passed away. She was surrounded by family, friends, and loving messages from all who knew her.

It is our sincere wish that those loving messages will fill the minds and hearts of JC's family, particularly Tammy Colter, another beloved member of our OH family.

Should you like to share your wishes of sympathy and your memories of JC with the Colter family, please leave your comments and wishes below or visit JC’s profile here on ObesityHelp. Cards may also be sent to the Colter family, care of ObesityHelp, at 8001 Irvine Center Dr., Suite 1270, Irvine, CA 92618.

We would also like to encourage everyone to take the time to read a recently published article in Bariatrics Today, that captured JC’s passion for Bariatrics and how she touched the lives of so many she met. Click here to read the article, Changing the Shape of Bariatrics – A Tribute to Jeannie Colter.

JC, you are and will forever be missed.

JC was an amazing woman and an inspiration to us all. She was the one that hired me here at ObesityHelp and we worked very closely for many years. I'm not sure if many people know this but JC was a very large part of the bariatrics movement in this country. Not only was she one of the founders of ObesityHelp but she was also a Bariatric Nurse that dedicated her life to helping those with obesity. I will personally miss her very much and I wish her family my condolences for their loss. We love you JC!

Tammy, JC and the entire Colter family, you are in my thoughts and prayers. If not for JC, I would probably not have had the chance to work here at ObesityHelp. Thank you both Tammy and JC, for everything.

Tammy, my heart goes out to you and your family at this time. JC was a wonderful lady with a love of life. Fiesty is a great word to describe her. She made our Pittsburgh convention one to remember. J.C. was so special to everyone at OH. She was so driven to help people and as a result, so many lives have been touched with her endless love and compassion. She is a big part of the foundation of OH and her spirit here will carry on with us all. She was the reason for me being hired to this, the best organization I have ever worked for. I am very saddened to read about the loss of JC to both OH, the community and her family. She truly did a lot to help move along the growth of Obesityhelp and will be forever remembered for all she did to help those trying to overcome obesity. I can never forget her going out of her way to help patients who needed deparate help and reaching out to the surgeon community to find them the help they needed. My sincere condolences to the Colter family. JC will always be a pillar of OH.

I was actually hired on after JC had taken a backseat roll at OH so I was not as fortunate to have known her personally, however everywhere you look on the website, you will see her presence. I feel like I have lost out on something incredible! Tammy and family, you are continually in my prayers! ~~Amy Lucas

JC and I had such a history together. I've been with OH, on staff now for five years. She hired me on as a contractor in late 2002, I believe it was, having liked my volunteer graphics work so much. She was always so very loving and concerned for me, too, calling and sending flowers when I had both my gastric bypass and my hernia repair surgeries. Additionally, she helped me through some hard times personal times by phone and was always very reassuring. JC was an extraordinary woman - and a HILARIOUS one, too! She used to love for me to email her jokes when I could. Only wish I could have sent more, but I know she had tons of family and friends that kept her spirits up til the end. I'll always love her, and I'll miss her deeply. -- Amy Young

I am glad to have worked beside JC for so long. One of the best memories I have is simply being in the presence of her absolutely fantastic laugh in Pittsburgh – such great memories there. I am going to miss our jokes and candid conversations. Her life well lived is represented all around in this community. She pushed for us all. My sympathies to the Colter family (Tammy, we love you).

When I first started at OH, JC was my mentor, guiding me in my role in Client Services. Then, when it was time for my surgery, she was my surgery Angel, but above all of that, JC was she was my friend. When JC asked if she could be my Surgery Angel when I had surgery in April of 2001, I was so honored. She put in so many hours here at Obesityhelp, assisting our members and our surgeons in the fight against obesity and to have her take the time to be there, supporting me as I embarked on this journey, was so profound. Little did I know just how deep her devotion went. She truly dedicated her life to OH and the Bariatric Community. She was very involved in the push to get qualified surgeons active in OH, so that our members could have a choice in whose hands they put their lives in. So in essence, JC was an Angel to us all and, even more so now. Wendell, Tammy, Jackie, Julie and Scott, please know that you’re Wife and Mother made a huge impact in my life, not only in what she taught me, but what she gave me and that was her devotion to this company and her friendship, unconditional. I love you and miss you. Always in my heart, Nikki H

To Tammy and family: I am so sorry for your loss and my prayers are with you at what must be a most difficult time. I met you and J.C. at the most important event of my life. I started with OH on the day of my consultation for surgery in 2001 and had the pleasure of meeting J.C. and you in 2004 in Arlington. I would not be where I am today if it hadn't been for that event and for OH. Because of OH I am trying to continue on the same path of reaching out to others that walk in my shoes. J.C. did a wonderful thing that I'm sure has touched many thousands by now. Thank you...bless your heart. Much love, Yvonne

I am very saddened by the passing of JC. It is really hard to believe when someone that was bigger than life is gone. JC was one of a kind and a dear friend of the entire weight loss surgery community. She pioneered, along with Eric Klein, the use of the Internet for hundreds of thousands of morbidly obese people to support each other in their journey to weight loss surgery. She will be missed by so very many people from all walks of life.

I will remember fondly JC's laughter and her 'fun' side. She was a very comical lady and she had such a great passion to see morbidly obese people get the help and compassion they deserve. I will never forget her telling me about her love of 'green M&M's' and Cafe Mocha Coffee. She was great dancer too! JC you have helped so many and your legacy will live on for many years. Rest now JC - we will carry on the fight.

Where do you start when something like this happens? No words can bring JC back. No amount of tears, love, or pain. We can only look forward to remembering her, and share our memories with each other. My heart aches for Tammy and her family. I’ve known them for 8 years now. So many years ago, I started working with OH… JC and Eric took me under their wings and taught me everything I know about OH. So many late nights and early Saturday mornings JC and I worked on the phone to calm whatever situation had arisen. I miss those times with her. JC’s illness prevented her from working so much the last year or so…which was a loss for OH and my co-workers. But during our time with her, she taught all of us so much. While I’m no longer with OH, my heart still lies with them. Her loss will be felt by everyone there I’m sure. The loss of her years of experience in the field will be a loss to all of the newbies on the OH team. As well as not being able to meet one of the pillars of the bariatric community. They will not be able to be privileged to meet her in person, and get to know the JC we all knew. I just loved those rare opportunities that I had to be with her in person over the years. We had so much fun and laughed so much! JC was a blast to be with. Tammy, you are an inspiration to me…your strength is amazing. My love goes out to you and your family. Know that we are all here with you, for you. Take strength little sparrow, for you are not forgotten; I am here. --- Sherri Carver, (aka Boobunnies)

I met JC years ago when she contacted me to help launch the first OH Conference in Austin, Texas. She brought me to California for a visit and tour of the OH facilities and I had the pleasure of working with her on the first Arlington, Texas conference. She was certainly "feisty," but moreso, she was loving, giving, caring, funny and a friend. I am so, so sorry to hear of her passing, but please do know that she touched the lives of so many and rescued an untold number of lives with her battle for all of us that suffer(ed) with obesity. Rest well, JC, you fought the good fight. You will be missed, my friend. Cheryl
