First non-invasive bariatric procedure performed in Eastern United States

Bariatric Surgeon Performs the First StomaphyX Procedure in the Eastern U.S. at Munroe Regional

Ocala, FL – On June 13, Dr. Todd Overcash of the Florida Bariatric Center performed the first NOTES (Natural Orifice Transesophageal Surgery) procedure at Munroe Regional Medical Center, a Bariatric Center of Excellence.  This procedure featured an endoluminal gastric pouch reduction and an endoluminal gastric sleeve procedure.

"The StomaphyX procedure represents a step forward in providing, less invasive solutions to the complex issue of weight management and control," said Michael Wesolowski, Vice President of Operations at Munroe Regional Medical Center.  "It offers patients another alternative to consider in the array of options before them.  Munroe Regional Medical Center is proud to be the only hospital in the Southeast providing this service to our community."

Dr. Overcash is one of the original four surgeons in the United States trained to perform this state-of-the-art procedure and the first in the Eastern United States.  The procedure uses the StomaphyX™ device, which allows the surgeon to perform the procedure without any external or internal incisions.  It is available for individuals who have had previous gastric bypass surgery and who are regaining weight and those who want an alternative to invasive weight loss surgery.  In most cases, the StomaphyX™ procedure is performed as outpatient surgery.

The benefits of this procedure include:

  • Less clinical risk because there is no need for surgical incisions.
  • Enables the surgeon to reduce the size of the stomach.
  • Preserves future treatment options.
  • Essentially no pain for the patients.
  • Faster recovery than with open/laparoscopic procedures.

"The StomaphyX™ allows me, as a surgeon, to offer patients the most comprehensive weight loss options in the country," said Dr. Todd Overcash.  "This is the most affordable weight loss surgery available, the least invasive, and has the lowest risk of complications.  There is essentially limited recovery time for the patient, which allows the patient to return to their daily activities and work environment, typically on the same day."

For further information on the StomaphyX™ procedure please contact Munroe Regional Medical Center’s Health Resource Line at 352-867-8181 or visit www.MunroeRegional.com and click on the StomaphyX™ banner.

Munroe Regional Medical Center, a Bariatric Center of Excellence, is located in the heart of North Central Florida.  Munroe Regional is a 421-bed not-for-profit acute care hospital whose mission is to continually meet the changing health needs of the community through caring, patient-centered services of the highest quality.

Munroe is located at 1500 SW 1st Ave, Ocala, Florida.

From what I read, this looks like it is a procedure for poeple who have already had gastric bypass surgery and have regained their weight. Is this something that can be used for the first time Gastric Bypass patient?

Dr. Shawn Garber in New York performs the procedure as well. The price is about $9000.

I would like an explanation of why it costs so much. $9,500 is the quote from the Dr. Overcash's office. Maybe as there is more competition price will go down.

I love it now maybe my United Health Care will cover ME. They are refusing to cover me saying it is an "invasive" surgery re the Lapband. My hubby is in the military and I NEED to be around for my babies but health care WON"T cover ME.

I find it interesting that you think competition will lower the price. The 9500 is far cheaper than a revision or a first time RNY at 25K and in fact is cheap in light of the fact that the price covers surgeon, anesthesia, and hospital. In addition the product itself to do the procedure is costly and is going to have a price increase for the product in the near future.

I just had the Vertical Gastrectomy Sleeve done June 29, 07 by Dr. Guillermo Alvarez in Mexico. Laparoscopic is no problem at all. $10K is all and it covers EVERYTHING. Dr. Alvarez is the most experienced surgeon in the world with bariatrics...go see him. I wouldn't mess with something that is really new right now...go with the VSG if you want to do this now.

Am hot---> firemanjohn<---go with Vsg. Safe and low risk. Ive had Vsg at lapsf with Dr Feng 14 months ago. Ive lost "ALL" extra weight and am in perfect shape. Run 25-35 miles a week and have run in 8 races this summer. Being skinny is awsome. Wife just had Verticle Sleeve Gastrectomey "VSG" with Dr Alverez. Vsg Rocks. Would like to see illistration of this new proceedure. Good luck to all..."Remember weight loss surgery is dangerous but obesity is Deadly."

I think the idea is ok, but the issue is that this is a restriction only procedure, and not a substitue for the current bariatric surgeries for those that are Morbidly Obese or SMO. Scott

I am having VSG in November. I think it is very affordable comparatively. I am looking forward to the 'old' me coming back.

8/2/07 This new StomaphyX procedure? What do you all think? I need to lose more weight. Am 5 years out of by-pass. Does anyone know anyone in Maryland or Delaware that does this procedure? Do you think insurance will cover it? Contact me at khelms@excite.com Thanks. I have thought about lap-band, but not sure and have to go upstate DE for that.

$9000 OH darn! I can't afford that......that just depressed me more. Plus I live on the West Coast. Phoooey! I guess I will just have to lose weight on my own. Shucks!

Comment by yvettetas on Oct 27, 2007 at 07:18pm
if you had the RNY bye pass 10 months ago , and your body isn't loosing weight. is it ok to get this procedure ? and will this help you loose weight faster. its been 10 month for me and i only lost 40lb
Comment by liquidl on Mar 07, 2008 at 06:12pm
i have found several doctors on the west coast who now do this procedure. It is catching on like wildfire and I would buy stock in the company that makes StomaphyX if I didn't have to pay for the surgery. Average results are 10, then 15, then 20 lbs total lost in the first, second, and third months after this procedure. There is very little recovery time and lots of people are back at work the next day. It's quite a short procedure (sometimes on 15 or 20 minutes.) I like that!

I had surgery August of 2006, I lost about 50lbs, I had the Roun y , a year and 7 months later I have regained all of the weight, my first surgery was in 2003 and I never felt restriction, it took alot for me to feel full, and I never had the feeling of throwing up if I took another bite, the revision in 2006 was supposed to correct this problem but did not, if anybody has had this same problem, or knows if there is something that can be done please help I am desperate, Terry

Dr. Overcash's office located in Ocala, FL has been no help at all, they have completely dropped the ball and prolonged the denial for at least 4 months. It made no sense at all, they are horrible and I would not refer anyone to him because his staff is awful.
