Understanding Why Your Spouse Is Struggling to Support Weight Loss Surgery
“I just don’t understand it,” Dawn said. “Why doesn’t my husband want me to have the surgery?” Tammy agreed. Her spouse was also unsupportive: “My husband said, ‘Just keep trying new diets—you should be able to lose weight. This surgery is too risky and doesn’t make sense.’”

You’ve decided that surgery is right for you, but your spouse is convinced it’s the wrong choice. What to do?

I sat down with Howard Halford, Bruce McKee and Mike Gibson, who were initially very nervous about their wives’ decisions to have weight loss surgery. They provided some valuable insights into the partner’s experience.

I would like comments on the lap band vs gastric bypass. Also, persons who Dr. Diaz has performed the surgery. Does anyone know how many bariactric surgeries he has performed? I live about 175 miles from Indy. Has anyone driven there and how were the follow-up appts? ( convenience, time etc?} I quallify for both surgeries but haven't fully decided which one. I am 5'7" and weigh 270 lbs. Is it true that carbonated beverages and all sugars are out for the remainder of your life with gastric bypass? Is it true that a bowel obstruction is almost a given with gastric bypass? If I decide on the lapband, what is that port procedure like?

Garland, Yes, according to my surgeon, carbonated beverages are out-- period. That's per my MD, maybe someone elses has a different opinion. According to what I understand, the carbonation gives you excess gas and stretches the pouch. I believe any items with more than 3gms of sugar per serving will give you dumping syndrome, but have read that it doesn't give it to everyone. I'm a newby just recently got my rny, so I'm certainly not an expert. Hopefully, someone who's had the surgery can give you more info. Hope this helped Greatdanemom

Listen as far as my spouse. I simply put it this way. If you had the chance to change your life for the better would you? And he said yes he would. I had struggled with a 100 extra pounds for my whole life and had hypertension, develpoed diabetes even though I did all the right stuff. Now since my surgery I have stayed in the normal blood sugar range, my hypertension is under control with out meds. and its only been 6 weeks since my surgery and I lost 35 lbs. I had the full bypass because I just don't want to have to deal with adjustments and worrying about slippage and all that by thats what worked for me. But even if you husband doesn't understand just tell him it is what will make you happy. Dieting is not the way to live. Life style change is what the surgery is about. Good Luck but just remember this is for you weather anyone else agrees or not It is your life. Believe me it took a while for my husband to understand and see what it meant for me also. But now he is very happy and proud of me. Take Care Always johesn56

If you want to be able to eat sugar and drink carbonated beverages consider the DS. The band and most RNY surgeons advocate giving up carbonated beverages for life post op. The DS allows you to eat pretty much the way you did preop after a few months...except not as much. Scott
