Crying foul: Suit says H.P. Regional bariatric surgery unfairly assessed

High Point Regional Hospital and Cornerstone Health Care are suing so that a controversial weight-loss procedure in the lucrative field of bariatric surgery will be eligible for insurance reimbursement.The hospital and physicians group filed suit Feb. 5 in the Middle District of North Carolina claiming the American College of Surgeons violated state antitrust and anticompetitive laws by denying accreditation of their mini-gastric bypass operation. Without accreditation, Medicare and most major insurance companies will not reimburse bariatric surgery, which last year generated about $5.1 billion for hospitals nationally.
