My first impression of him was his warmth and sincerity. He made you feel as though you were a part of the family. Dr. Ortiz and Dr Martinez both are wonderful surgeons and I've had a few in my day.
As a whole the staff was great his sister and mother works with him. I did encounter paperwork issues with one particular worker but another assistant was there to take care of the situation.
I've have not come across a Dr that smiles and laughs so much as a matter of fact the day of my surgery was his birthday.
I spent a good long while speaking with him and quizzing him on facts about issues on the lap-band surgery and he passed.
I developed a UTI (uniary tract infection) he and Dr Martinez insisted that I come to the hospital and have it taken care of by him.
Not only did I have office, hospital phone numbers but their own personal cell numbers.
Ratings would be A+ and I'm looking for an overall experience but surgical competence leads the way.
Updated information as of 9-10-04 I had to have the port moved to another side only because my body doesn't seem to take kindly to it. Dr Martinez & Dr Ortiz have been great throughout the entire ordeal. I mention Dr Martinez's name first because he is the one who I speak to more frequently. All Dr.s' that I've come incontact with are great here in Mexico. Both Dr.s' have done all they could for me now it's up to my body to decide if the second port will be rejected. Just as a side note I had to go to emergency here in the states and the Dr. here confirmed everything that was said by the Dr.s' in Mexico.

I am a nurse and decided to have this done after much research. Dr.Ortiz was recommended by a bariatric surgeon here in the states that he had trained.
The care in Mexico is different for sure. Office setting is not as professional and the Doctor's themselves did the testing ect...lab was kinda strange (sterile technique was not a high priority) This was located on the side of the building Dr.Ortiz's office was in.
The hotel was nice and the staff were familiar with the Lap Band patients. Dr.Ortiz and his mother meet you in the lobby the day of the surgery (this is where I met other pt's post-op and pre-op) Forget about confidentiality but I did not mind. The whole process is a bit unorganized but the surgery center itself was like a high rise office bldg and this was a corner of one floor. It was clean and had a view of the golf course. The surgery suite itself appeared "hightech" .
Just remember you are in Mexico and things are a bit different.
I have done well post op and would do it again.
No, there is not a structured aftercare and that is one thing I would like to see happen.

I first had a consultation with Dr. Ortiz in October, 2003 at his office. He was very gracious and gave my three friends and I all the time we needed to ask silly and not so silly questions of him. We were an hour late because of the traffic on a Friday evening. He was so kind.

My impression of him did not change while I learned more about his credentials and qualifications, except that I grew more aware that he was the one I wanted for my surgeon.

Overall, both Drs. Ariel Ortiz and Martinez are very wonderful doctors. Dr. Martinez spent a whole hour talking with my friend who is a nurse who flew to Los Angeles from Seattle to go with me for the surgery. They are both competent surgeons and have great bedside manner, making my nervous mother and my RN friend, plus me, feel at ease and more relaxed about the whole lap band procedure.

UPDATE April 3, 2004; Just returned from Tijuana yesterday and was extremely pleased with the Doctors, the Staff and the facilities. Dr. Ortiz and his associates all speak fluent english and are very communicative and helpful. I would not hesitate to recommend them to my own family, or anybody else considering this Lap Band approach to weight loss.

PRE-SURGERY March 25,2004; As of today I have only corresponded with Dr. Ortiz via email, although I have had extensive phone contact with his staff. His counselor Robin M. has been extremely helpful and accommadating which has made me very comfortable with the whole thing.

I am scheduled for surgery on April 1,2004 at Oasis Hospital with Dr. Ortiz and I am glad to say that I am very comfortable with the upcoming event. As an ex-medical professional myself I have asked a lot of questions and done a lot of extensive research and I would not hesitate for a minute to recommend Dr. Ortiz and his staff (particularly Robin) to others.

During my research work I looked into all types of Weight Loss surgery and consulted with atleast four Bariatric Surgeons before making my decision. At 45 years of age and with a BMI of 41.75, and two "co-morbities" (B.P. and borderline Type II Diabetes) I am looking forward to the Lap Band and the huge change in my life.

I will give another update on Dr. Ortiz and his staff following my surgery, but in the meantime if I can be of assistance please contact me at [email protected].

**JUST LOOKING FORWARD TO THE BIG DATE NOW**

I was very pleased with Dr. Ortiz and all of his staff. They were great! I got to meet all of his team from psychologist, nutitionist etc..

Dr. Ortiz was very handsome, personable and capable. I met him the day prior to my surgery, but we had corresponded via e-mail previously. He has alot of experience performing lap band surgery and is an international proctor instructing surgeons in the how to's of lap band surgery. He also conducts ongoing research concerning the placement of the band and its relationship to success rates. I felt like I was in very good hands, but I was not thrilled with the hospital where the procedure was done. It was in disrepair and was not up to par with hospitals in the U.S. The staff was as caring as could be expected, since they spoke little to no English. There were quite a few mix-ups with taxis, hospital vans and other transportation due to the language differences. My reason for going to Tijuana was for Dr. Ortiz to perform my surgery and I was more than pleased with the results.

I researched possible surgerons for weeks and it came down between Ortiz and Rumbault. Both were very nice, well educated, well respected, said wonderful things about the other. I chose to go with Ortiz because I am researching BAJA for a novel and would have had to go back anyway for research and fills.
I have not met him yet as surgery is Tuesday 11/04 and this is 11/01.
The only issue I have so far is that I have not heard back on a couple questions, but I will ask them when I get to TJ. And although it was suggested that I go on a liquid protein diet, i never found out how many calories, how often etc.
