Obesity is an underappreciated disease that is poorly understood and harbors many societal obstacles in its treatment . Currently more than one third of the population is overweight. The most effective treatment of morbid obesity is surgery. Surgery has proven to be both cost effective, durable and safe. Prevention and education are key factors in stopping the spread of obesity. However, once a patient is Morbidly obese(>100Ibs over weight-BMI >40) those methods have poor success rate and result in failure, despair and depression.

Most of my patients have multiple medical problems that have been ignored, mistreated because there are no effective treatment of the underlying disease. This situation is worse because of concomitant depression and anxiety that overwhelms individuals that are obese. Breaking this vicious cycle of disease is our goal.

The challenge is to be a sensitive surgeon who recognizes obesity as a multifactorial disease and treats each individual in a compassionate manner.
