When I first met Dr Greene he had not yet started doing gastric bypass surgery but had a very good reputation as a general surgeon.
He is very caring and personable and will spend as much time with you as you want. I was most impressed with his honesty. Scored BIG points with me there.
His staff are caring but are far too busy and could use some help in answering questions from patients and dealing with insurance companies etc. When I asked staff members what I should do about things the insurance company wanted I was simply told "I dunno." I was left out in the cold to deal with the insurance company by myself. A bit overwhelming. I even asked for suggestions but got the same answer. Because of this I seriously reconsidered looking for another surgeon. Had I not been so impressed with Dr Greene himself, I might have walked away. I handled the insurance company and delt with denials and fought them alone and won. It can be done.
*NOTE* These were just MY personal impressions of MY own personal experience and I am making no statements about what other people may experience.
The support group meetings are twice a month and aftercare is emphasized as very important. Dr Greene attends each one and also has dinner after the meetings with the group.
Overall, I have confidence in Dr Greene and know that I will be in good hands.

Hes awesome! I switched for Dr. Vanguri for distance reasons. Dr Green and his staff are the absolute best! Especially Julia!

I had my first appointment at Dr. Barry Greene's office yesterday, July 2, 2002. He was very nice and seemed genuinely concerned about me as a patient. Dr. Greene's staff was especially wonderful. They took their time in answering any questions and explaining all of Dr. Greene's procedures and requirements.
Dr. Greene has a wonderful aftercare program and before surgery care program. He runs a support group along with Dr. William Marcus at the Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, MD. It is mandatory for his Pre-op and post-op patients to attend this support group at least once a month. He also stresses the importance of taking a multi vitamin, drinking a protien drink and exercising before surgery in order to optimise the healing process.
So far I give Dr. Greene a THUMBS UP!

I had my first meeting with Dr. Greene today.(6/11/02) I have to say I am very pleased with him and his staff. I called over 8 different surgeons. I narrowed it down to Dr. Greene because his staff was the nicest to me. Pat was so nice and made me an appointment with in 2 weeks of my phone call. She was not cold or short with me as the other office's were. Julia is wonderful as well. She answered all my questions before I even had to ask. She was full of info and as "sweet as pie!" When I came for my appt she remembered talking with me on the phone. I was impressed, I was a person and not just another patient.

Dr. Greene an extremely busy man, is wonderful as well. He answered all my questions and was honest about everything. He laied it all out on the table for me. He to did not treat me as if I was just another patient. He really listened to me and made me feel like he was eager to help me. The personal attention was important to me and Dr. Greene gave that to me.

The only thing that I can think of that was less than perfect was my timing I guess. He is in demand....lol. He had lots of patients to see the afternoon of my appt. So, I was at his office form my appt time which was 2:30pm until 5:30pm. The waiting was long to finally get to meet Dr. Greene but let me also say "HE WAS WORTH EVERY MIN OF IT" :o)

5/14/02 - My consultation appointment with Dr. Greene was today. There were 4 other people in my group and we all met with Julia Hernandez the surgical coordinator / office manager who explained the procedure with a PowerPoint presentation. Julia was very personable and I could tell she cares a great deal about the people who come into her office. My weight was taken and BMI calculated and I was given a packet of information and instructions to begin the many tests required prior to surgery, or for that matter, a request for approval to my insurance company. I did have to complete paperwork a second time since I was given Dr. Marcus' paperwork at the support group. This was a bit of a bummer considering I am quite organized and anal retentive, so this was not in my plans and I thought could have been avoided. At the end, I met individually with Dr. Greene and Julia. I felt a bit rushed and didn't get a chance to ask all of the questions I would have liked to ask. Dr. Greene has only done 35 or so bariatric procedures, so I would have liked to learn more about his surgical background. I guess I'll have to corner him at the next support group meeting to get my answers.

My Bariatric Surgeon is Dr. Barry S. Greene
My first impression of Dr. Greene is that he is not only a really nice person
but is very detailed and to the point. But the one thing that really got to me
is that he understands what obese people go through. Not only in every day life
but how we are discriminated against.

The office staff for Dr. Greene are absolutely fabulous!!! Everyone is so helpful
and really kind, with great personalities. It is like having your own medical cheer
leaders. They don't only want you just to have the surgery but they want you to
succeed in taking off the weight and leading a great life afterward.

Dr. Greene has gone over the surgery types and explained everything several times and
always invites questions. And the thing I really love is that you are treated like
family at this practice. They learn your name and really take an interest. Dr. Greene
is really persistant in great before and after surgery care. Everyone lets you know
exactly what will be expected of you as the patient and what you will need to do to
get into the best shape possible to go through the surgery and heal quickly. The staff
and the doctor have gone over all the risks of the surgery and explained what they do
pre-operatively to prevent or lessen the chances of these complications.

With Dr. Greene I get a great feeling of professional confidence and a wonderful bedside
manner. And in a surgeon that is a rare thing. Honestly, I really cannot think of a single
bad thing about the doctor or his staff. But I will update as the whole situation progresses.

3/16/02 18 days post-op Roux en-Y laproscopicly. I am truely impressed with Dr. Greene's knowledge, skill, dedication and honesty. One of the best laproscopic surgeons in the area.
His staff, Mainly Julia is the best. And the bi-weekly support group meetings are the best. The hospital, the after care, and the support group is all a well orchastrated machine. Unbelievable. I was a dead man walking and very scared of the whole surgery thing. I owe my life to these people who worked very hard to give me the best care possible and put to rest my many fears along the way. I am truly grateful. I now have a whole new way of life, which has replaced my old way of life. Dr Greene and his staff are new to weight loss surgery. But not new to surgery. He is and has been a highly skilled laproscopic surgeon. Because this is new to him there were some small bugs that needed fixing along the way. But, they covered all the biggies and through-out it all I knew I was being well cared for. In and out in three days. At the end of my third day I was home in my favorite chair reading my mail as happy as I could possibly be.
If you are thinking weight loss surgery, you cannot go wrong with Dr. Greene et al. It keeps getting better every day. Thank you ObesityHelp for all the help along the way.

My first impression of Dr. Greene was amazing, he never once hesitate on any question that I ask. The staff is wonderful I know I am a pain. Whenever somethings cross my mind I am calling to ask. He emphasize on aftercare alot and the importance of it. Dr. Greene made me feel so comfortable because he did not sugar coat the risks of the surgery. I would rate Dr. Greene a 9 (nobody ever gets a 10). I am so excited of Dr.Greene's knowledge, and the fact his a LAP specialist. Julia you are the greatest.

quiet, serious, competent, enjoy his thorough knowledge of current research and his obvious dedication to the well being of his patients. He is also very frank and open when asked questions. His staff is very caring, friendly, and hard working. They (Dr. and nurse) attend biweekly support group meetings and dinners out with postops. He does laproscropic bariatric surgery. Much emphasis on habit change and follow-up. He describes in detail the aftercare protocol and he cites frequently the risks of the surgery and ways to minimize them. Overall great rating. Both are great. He doesn't joke as much as he probably will before we are done!!!!
