I had my surgery Dec.6, 06 and three days later had to have a leak repaired. I was in a coma for two weeks, hospital six weeks, rehab six weeks and have had complications up to now. Dr.Moiel was very arogant and cold to talk to. He would only say that I was "a very sick girl" when I asked if I had almost died. It wasn't until much later that I faced the scope of the real situation. I am trying to deal with a full abdominal hernia as a complication of my surgery. My other doctor doesn't recomend corrective surgery because of all of my past complications. I need job training because I can't stand or bend too long. I have kept off one hundred pounds and am working on the next thirty.Everyone should really weigh all of the pros and cons and consider all aspects of the surgery.

I thought Dr. Moiel was a very nice surgeon, he has a very good bedside manner. The staff at Kaiser were wonderful, the nurses were marvelous.I would rate Dr. Moiel a 10 out of 10. He was wonderful, and I would highly reccommend him to all my friends.

I had heard that Dr. Moiel was a tough guy and did not have the greatest bedside manner, so i was pretty nervous meeting him for the first time. When i met him, i didnt at find him difficult and in fact liked him very much. He does have a strange sense of humor and sometimes you have to figure out if he's joking with you or not. The office staff was fine, I didnt spend much time with them so i dont really have any opinion one way or the other.
I guess what I would say as far as what other should know, i think he expects you to definately have shown weight loss before you see him (maybe that's why he was nice to me...LOL) ask lots of questions and take your support person with you to the apt.
There is a structured aftercare program and he encourages you to see your PCP soon after surgery to start working with them.
Dr. Moiel spent a great deal of time with me and my husband at our apt with him talking about risks and answering any and all concerns we had.
I have nothing but good things to say about Dr. Moiel, i was very impressed with him and knew i was in good hands!
As for which is most important surgical competence or bedside manner.....personally, when it comes to a surgeon, I dont care if he has a bad bedside manner, i just want to know that he does excellent surgery...JMHO

I felt Dr. Moiel was wonderful. He was a little worried about my age at first, but then he said I would be a great canidate for surgery. He was very straight forward. After surgery, I got the flu and he called me 3 times to make sure I was ok. My scar is minimal, as was my pain. I was also told that Dr. Moiel is the surgeon that all the Kaiser employees go to.
He is a wonder and skilled surgeon. Like I said, he is straight forward and doesnt not do a whole lot of chit-chatting, but he wants to know about you also.
I would reccomend him again and again.

Dr. Moiel has some very strong oppinions about WLS and what you need to do to prepare yourself for it... His "my way or the highway" additude can come off as self-righteous, but I am following all instructions and time will tell if he is right!

6-6-03 After further review, I really have grown to like and appreciate Dr. Moiel. He really does care for his patients, and he has been very supportive post-op. I am grateful for his guidence and his concern for me and my health. I would rate Dr. Moiel a 10... I was lucky to have him!

What can I say? I was planning on seeing Dr. Moiel for over a year, and then at the last minute there was a cancellation for an appointment with Dr. Kosta. I took it. He was fabulous. He spent over an hour with my husband and me. I liked him except for the words "you are not quite ready". He said that I was 75% ready, but until I can change my eating habits more, I might not succeed, even with the surgery. He gave me his card with his number, so that when (or if) I am ready I should call him. I lost 10 more pounds and called him. He would not return my call. Now I know that I could never have him for my doctor. I am way too bitter. I called and asked for a different doctor...Dr. Moiel. I dont know if this will make a difference or not, as I am pretty disappointed with Kaiser.
