  • About Me

John J. Feng, MD specializes in advanced laparoscopic and minimally invasive weight loss, or bariatric surgery. He has dedicated his practice to several methods of bariatric surgery, all of which can be performed laparoscopically. He believes that surgery can be tailored to the individual patient.  These procedures thus allow for less postoperative pain, smaller scars, fewer wound problems and quicker recovery.  These techniques include the (1) placement of an adjustable gastric band, or LAP-BAND® System, (2) vertical sleeve gastrectomy, and (3) Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.

As an American Society for Bariatric Society Center of Excellence Surgeon and Board Certified General Surgeon, Dr. Feng was the Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery Services at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco for several years and later the Medical Director of the Bariatric Surgery Services at Sequoia Hospital.  He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.  He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biological Sciences from Stanford University with Honors and Distinction in 1988 and completed Medical School in 1993 at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF). He trained at UCSF for general surgery residency from 1993 to 2001, during which time he dedicated 3 years to wound healing research with Dr. Thomas K. Hunt. He then completed a specialty fellowship with Dr. Michel Gagner and Dr. Barry Salky at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City in advanced laparoscopic and minimally invasive general surgery and bariatric surgery from 2001-2002.

Currently, his main office is located at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation Redwood City Clinic. Dr. Feng has privileges at Sequoia Hospital, Stanford University and El Camino Hospital. He also operates at the Dr. R. Hewlett Lee Surgecenter of Palo Alto and the Menlo Park Surgical Hospital. For his patients, with a multidisciplinary group of specialists, including registered dieticians, psychologists and psychiatrists, bariatric medicine specialists and fellow surgeons, he is able to provide nutritional support and long-term followup on a regular basis. Palo Alto Medical Foundation has several support group meetings to help achieve optimal care for patients.  Patients are able to see the Registered Dieticians and Bariatric Medicine specialists in the PAMF Fremont, Redwood City, Palo Alto, Mountain View and Santa Cruz offices, giving patients flexibility in long term followup care across many locations throughout the Northern California area.

After completing training in advanced laparoscopic bariatric surgery in 2001, Dr. Feng entered private practice and has established himself as an expert and specialist in minimally invasive surgery for treating obesity and many general surgery disorders. After thriving in solo practice in San Mateo, California, Dr. Feng joined the Palo Alto Medical Foundation  in the Redwood City Center in September 2009.

Dr. Feng’s specialty interests include Laparoscopic Surgery for treatment of Morbid Obesity, as well as a variety of Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery for treatment of many surgical diseases such as acid reflux, hiatal hernia, achalasia, tumors, ulcers, feeding tube needs, gastroparesis, bleeding, adhesions, colon, solid organ, and gallbladder disorders.
A highly-trained expert in Laparoscopic, or Minimally Invasive Surgery, Dr. Feng has developed many areas of expertise in his practice and authored numerous articles on many of these subjects.

Appointed: Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery Services, California Pacific Medical Center (2004 - 2007)

Dr. Feng strives to provide high-quality surgical care to patients in a personal, compassionate manner. He engages his patients in discussions about their care and provide an opportunity for them to share in the decision-making process. He believes that rather than just telling my patients what to do, it is important to provide informed options so that they can choose what fits best with their personal values - to the extent that it is safe and reasonable to do so.

He enjoys explaining what is going on with a patient’s medical concerns and helping them understand their general surgical issues. He enjoys answering questions from patients because he believe that the more patients understand, the better able they are to care for themselves. Most of all, he enjoys working together with my patients as a partner in their surgical care.

Dr. John Feng put great effort in providing comprehensive and expert care with long-term follow-up in the surgical treatment of obesity with options including adjustable gastric banding, vertical/sleeve gastrectomy, and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, using minimally invasive or laparoscopic techniques
