    Dr. Murayama is chief of surgery at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center and professor of surgery, division of gastrointestinal surgery at Penn Medicine. Dr. Murayama received his medical degree from the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine. He completed his surgical residency at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago and a research fellowship in pancreatic physiology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and Lakeside Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Chicago.

    Dr. Murayama specializes in minimally invasive surgery of the gastrointestinal tract with a particular focus on laparoscopic bariatric surgeries including Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, adjustable gastric band, and sleeve gastrectomy. Dr. Murayama developed and directed the leading multidisciplinary comprehensive weight management program in Hawaii before relocating to Philadelphia. With extensive experience in comprehensive weight management, Dr. Murayama is able to provide a unique perspective on the essential balance between the medical and surgical approaches to weight loss. In addition to weight-loss surgery, his other clinical interests include surgery for diseases of the gallbladder, esophagus, spleen and adrenal gland as well as laparoscopic hernia repair.

    Dr. Murayama is board certified and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
