Dr. Fitzer obtained a B.S. in applied physics at Christopher Newport University and from there proceeded to Eastern Virginia Medical School for his M.D. degree.  He completed general surgery residency at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, Georgia, which is where he developed an interest in the treatment of obesity.

He left Savannah in 2005 for the University of Missouri, Columbia, where he completed a year-long fellowship in minimally-invasive bariatric surgery.  He was mentored there by several acknowledged laparoscopic surgery masters:  Steven Scott, Roger de la Torre, Bruce Ramshaw, and Steve Eubanks.

Dr. Fitzer entered private practice in Utica, New York, and operated at St. Luke's Hospital, a Bariatric Center of Excellence.  With Dr. Fitzer's help, St. Luke’s went on to be recognized for the best bariatric surgery outcomes in New York State -- a market with many good programs and stiff competition.  He practiced for five years in New York and performed some 1700 bariatric operations there.

Dr. Fitzer is happy to be back in his home State of Virginia.  Dr. Fitzer has devoted essentially 100% of his professional attention to obesity surgery since 2005.  His goal is to bring to Virginians the same high-level, compassionate care that he provided to New Yorkers for the past several years.
