    Dr. Williams is the director of the Penn Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Program and an associate professor of surgery. Dr. Williams received his medical degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and completed his surgical training in Ireland and at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He also completed a research fellowship in tumor biology at The Wistar Institute in Philadelphia.

    Dr. Williams joined the Penn faculty in 1997. Under his leadership, the Penn Metabolic and Bariatric Program has become the largest program in the Philadelphia region. Dr. Williams has been instrumental in the formation of a multidisciplinary, comprehensive approach to treatment of severe obesity including surgery, anesthesiology and psychology. Dr. Williams specializes in minimally invasive surgery of the gastrointestinal tract with a particular interest in laparoscopic bariatric surgical procedures including Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, adjustable gastric band, and sleeve gastrectomy. He performs robotic bariatric procedures as well. In addition, Dr. Williams has a clinical interest in diseases of the esophagus, stomach, and gallbladder.

    Dr. Williams is board certified and a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland and England. He is also a fellow of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
