I had my by-pass in 2004 , 2 yrs after having triple by-pass heart surgery where I got The Mercer Virus the worst staff infection you can get it took 4 mo. to recover and was told that I now had to worry about getting it again if I ever had to be opened up again . well no one else would talk to me about gastric bypass the other surgeons all said I had to lose 75-100 lbs before they would touch me well if I didn't meet Dr.Randall I would not be here I was diabetic 2028 mgs. of type 2 medication a day and 488 lbs Dr. Randall saved my life. I lost 250 lbs. in 18 mo. He was there like a saint, and when I went home if I had a question I called and he returned my call asap. I had to have my gall bladder removed I called him.The patients that passed were well aware of the risks of gastric-by-pass. If people weren't so eager to sue everybody and blame everybody this would be a better place to live. Dr. Sheldon Randall is a great surgeon and humanitarian I think he should never have been suspended

I had my surgery in 2006 which was the Roux N Y. It worked for six years. Then I developed an unconditional hernia that had to be repaired. So I had a second open incision and a mesh placed in 2012. One of the stitches ended up on a nerve in my abdomen and it took four months of intense pain before Dr. Randall told me what it was. He kept trying to inject a long acting anesthetic onto the nerve which did not work. I finally had to have a third surgery and again it was an open incision. The latter two surgeries were in Natick and I never thought twice about why not Medford. After each surgery I found him.less responsive; after the last surgery he never even saw me in the day surgery recovery room. Whatever he did in the last surgery, my bypass never worked again. I had no set point like I did before and have gained weight. I now have to try and find a surgeon and hopefully figure out what I can do next.

I had gastric bypass surgery with Dr. Randall in 2001. When my husband and I first met him., my husband asked what the biggest risk of the procedure was and Dr. Randall candidly said "death". I knew that this was a huge decision and life long commitment on my part and went through with the surgery. When I woke up in the recovery room., Dr. Randall was holding my hand and said, "Maureen - it's all over and you did great". I was in the hospital for only two days and on soft foods on day 5. I lost a total of 185 lbs. and kept it off until two years ago. I have become a "grazer" and as a result have gained 25 lbs. back. When I found out about Dr. Randall's license being suspended., I was shocked. ANYONE that goes through this surgery knows that there are substantial risks involved and while I feel awful for those that have lost loved ones., I am so thankful that I had him for a surgeon. He helped me get my life back and I am praying that the Board will reinstate his license soon. There isn't any other bariatric surgeon that I would feel comfortable going to except him. I haven't had any complications whatsoever in the 12 1/2 years since my surgery....

I believe that Dr. Randall is the top in his field. I had gastric by-pass surgery late May 2013.The sleeve procedure is the best. This is removing 80% of my stomach. No re-attaching of any internal organs. I believe that all surgeries have risks. Is this not something that you sign before having any procedure done? There isn't anything negative I can say about Dr. Randall. I am hoping he is back in practice soon. Politics enter into everything, and I think this is the case now.

This evening, I found out that Dr Randall's license to practice medicine had been suspended by the State Board of Medecine. Here is there press release:

WAKEFIELD: At its meeting on August 16, 2013, the state Board of Registration in Medicine took disciplinary action against the medical license of Sheldon Randall, M.D.

The Board summarily suspended Dr. Randall's medical license, finding him an immediate and serious threat to the public health, safety or welfare. The Board based its decision on allegations that Dr. Randall's treatment of four patients failed to meet the standard of care. Dr. Randall is a 1978 graduate of the Centro de Estudios Universitarios Xochicalco and was first licensed to practice medicine in Massachusetts in 1985. He practiced general surgery in Medford and Natick.

Eleven years ago, Dr Randall killed my father. He was performing a gastric bypass reversal and failed to sew up three holes in his stomach. My Dad developed sepsis and died five weeks later.

My family and I decided to not sue for malpractice. We filed a complaint with the Board of Medicine, but nothing was ever done.

I am glad that Dr Randall will never take someone's life away again.

Dr. Sheldon Randall is a perfectionist. An excellent surgeon who commands the operating room with your well being as his main driving force. Yes, there are hurdles before getting to the OR as there are with every program. They want to ensure you are of sound mind & are making this decision w/o pressure from others & a clear understanding of the lifestyle changes that will accompany it.

It is no walk in the park. Denial is a powerful coping mechanism until post operatively you learn quickly that you better use the techniques his staff so diligently taught you. It will remain a challenge a decade latter. It will remain in the forefront of your mind with every bit of food you put in your mouth as you learn to make appropriate choices to maintain what you have achieved.

After my surgery, I felt nothing, no pain and even wondered if the procedure was done. Dr. Randall telephoned me at 7:30PM the day of the surgery to see how I was doing. I asked him if he had done the procedure...He said take a look at your abdomen. There was a small clean dressing covering skin that was closed with sutures underneath the skin.

I benefited from a wonderful pain management team until I was able to move around. Once the epidural block dissipated, reality set in. I knew I had to keep moving in order to get to the next step in the process.

I did not see him post surgery until my office visit as I was at a teaching hospital. Everything went very well.

Six years later I developed pain - like my belly was on fire. The Boston Hospital checked to see if there was an issue with the surgical pouch created by the bypass. They were amazed. Not one of the four rows of sutures were out of place and the pouch size of the stomach was as though the procedure was done yesterday.

This is a major adjustment and lifestyle change that you must be prepared for. To this day, my husband wishes I did not have the procedure. It is my body, my choice and I have followed the plan to this day. The only caution I have is to continue to have your blood tested for levels of some of the vitamins for which absorption is altered.

If something does wrong, it is not always the doctor. They are people who dedicate their lives to helping others. Dr. Randall CARES. He is immaculate and precise in the operating room as this is his craft. Before pointing fingers, partner with your doctor and try to figure out what the issue is so you can get back on track. Be truthful. Not doing so helps no one.

This is just some of my experience now 11 years out. I remember it like it was yesterday. As a nurse, I know what excellence in practice is. I was so comfortable on the operating room table because I knew he was looking out for my well being.

He has helped thousands.

Like anything else, do your homework before you make a life changing decision like this procedure. And take ownership of your part of the process. Otherwise it will not produce the effects you are looking for.

Dr. Randall was great but his office staff was horrible!!!!! They kicked me out because I did not have a babysitter for my 1 year old son and because he was talking (NOT screaming) I was kicked out of the office!!!!! How unprofessional?!?!?! I also had an appointment for 3pm and he was not there and it was nearly 5pm...it is impossible to keep a child so young dead silent for so long. There are no signs saying that children are not welcome and in fact I have seen others with children there. Don't be surprised if Dr. Randall loses his license to practice because I am raising hell about this office. His office staff discriminates against certain types of people. Needless to say I walked out and found a new better more professional doctor. Please keep in mind that if my son was screaming I would have brought him out to the hall.
