Goal Of The Month:  Volunteer Your Time!

The OH community has been going strong for almost 15 years now.  We are surrounded by members who are supportive and inspiring, caring and dedicated, and last but not least...giving.

Over the years, many members of the OH community have volunteered their time by helping to design member profiles, post and edit photos, moderate the message boards or a scheduled surgeon chat, be a surgery date angel, and so much more!  When we posted about volunteers needed for the events we hosted in various cities, our members stepped forward in volumes.   The list is long of how many of you have volunteered your time while asking for nothing in return.  The ObesityHelp team appreciates all the ways that our members have helped to make a difference and make us the strong community of support that we have been and continue to be.  Thank YOU OH volunteers!

So, in the spirit of the holiday season, let's make it a goal this month to volunteer our time to help someone in need. Here are a 10 ways that you can volunteer your time this month:

1.  Offer to grocery shop for an elderly neighbor.

2.  If you are in a grocery store and see someone who is riding a cart, help them to unload the groceries at the checkout stand or help them shop for items that they might not be able to reach.

3.   Volunteer your time at a local animal shelter.  Offer to be a dog walker.  What a great way to get your exercise in!

4.  Help deliver meals! Become a Meals On Wheels delivery person.

5.  It's party season!  Donate your time to be a designated driver for family members or friends.

6.  Gather some of your neighbors and help clean up your neighborhood.

7.   Take an hour out of your day on the weekend and read a book to children at your local bookstore or to read a book for someone who is visually impaired.

8.  Make gifts for people who are in the hospital or in a nursing home.  Homemade greeting cards are a great idea!

9.  Volunteer to help out at a local race or walkathon.

10.  If you live where there is snow, help shovel an elderly neighbors driveway or front walkway.

There are countless ways we can all volunteer!  Need some ideas of what is needed in your neighborhood?  I found a great website where you can enter your zip code in and get a list of organizations looking for volunteers:  www.volunteermatch.org/

Are you already a volunteer?  We would love to hear about the ways you help to make a difference.  Post your comments below!
