So confused after consult-everything different than what i read on here, HELP!

I had my surgeon consultation yesterday and the seminar this morning. I am so confused and frustrated. My surgeon fought me over the DS (although they perform them) and said I would have diahrea and might have to wear diapers, and I would stink, and I couldn't eat fat or sugar, and he would not recommend it. He pushed, and me really pushed, for the RNY or the lapband. I told him I did not want either of those surgeries and when he asked why I tried to explain. One of the reasons I gave him is a don't want to be sick if I eat a sweet. He asked, "Why would you want to eat a sweet?" and you should be happy it makes you sick.  I looked him in the eye and resplied, "Because I'm human". I won't eat a lot of sweets, but I don't want to vomit every time I have a small piece of birthday cake or a cookie. We battled the DS/RNY for nearly two hours and according to him, even with the DS I couldn't eat sweets, fats, or soft foods or sauces. No mayo, no salad dressing, no tomatoes, no soups or gravies, etc. Also, I couldn't drink before, during or 90 minutes after eating. All the things he was telling me were the opposite of what I've been reading. I showed him some of my lilterature (and posts lol) and he said I couldn't believe everything I read. If I want it to be successful, I need to follow the plan. I'm exhausted, disappointed, and confused. I finally asked him about the sleeve and he said that would be acceptable but I would have all the same restrictions as the bypass.  I am going to research some more and then make my decision. I am going to another doctor in July for another consult and see what he says. I want the DS but not if it is going to have all the restrictions and negative side effects as the RNY. HELP ME PLEASE. I have gone the to sites many of you have recommended and I have a full binder of information, but what is real and what isn't? What's with my surgeon? Any insight or help would be grately appreciated. Thanks.

It seems painfully clear to me that it's time to switch surgeons.  A DS surgeon who claims you'll have to wear diapers isn't worth a nickle.  My DS surgeon said that if you have more than 4 BMs a day...that's too many and you need to address the problem.  He also said that living with excessive stink (gas and/or BMs) is not necessary and you can medicate for that as well.  I can't imagine going to a surgeon who said that you might have to live with such things. Finally, any DS surgeon who would say you couldn't eat fat....well...I'm guessing you're getting told this by a "bait and not switch".  My surgeon pushes may and full fat salad dressings.  He does all the WLS so he's not one to push any over the other.  That's YOUR choice! Trust me...I'm eating full fat, lots of mayo, soups, gravies, etc.  and I'm losing weight steadily.  Sounds to me like you've got some really BAD information from a surgeon.  But, trust me...you're not the first and you won't be the last.  I got the same type of info from a RNY surgeon that I was working with before I discovered the DS.  He told me the same thing.  Well....he lied.

Thank you. The only thing I can come up with is that the Lap and RNY must be the most cost effective for them to perform or something. I appreciate knowing what your surgeon told you and I will add your post to my binder!

that is a fact. the lap and RNY are better for the SURGEONS not you.  they get paid more for those procedures through insurance, than for the DS. Also, a LOT of people push the "stink" factor with the DS...but that can happen to ANYone...it is just more likely with weight loss surgery...and it STILL happens to RNY patients.  it's the bad bacteria in your intestines....which can be taken care of simply be eating yogurt with live cultures in them...probiotics. or there are pills, liquid drops, etc.   with the DS the intestinal length is shorter than with the RNY, so it can be more noticeable. that is IT, and it is easily fixed if you notice the problem. no diapers necessary! all that talk makes the doc sound ingorant and dishonest.

It's as simple as this:  He's wrong!!  First, clearly he doesn't do the DS because if he feels that way about it, it would be malpractice for him to do it.  Sccondly, since he does do RNY & Lapband, that's what he's pushing - that's where his bread is buttered - that's where he makes his living.  He's not objective and what you need is an objective medical opinion.  Go to a RNY doctor to get information about the RNY.  Go to a DS doctor to get information about the DS.  in some measure, don't trust either of them completely.  Use your research on here  and by reading clinical studies to make the best decision for you.  What you shouldn't do is listen to that quack.  Just my modest opinion.

I have been to that site many times and have printed much of the information. That is one of the reasons I was able to argue with him about DS. It scares me to think that if I hadn't done as much research (including reading posts from all of you) about DS, I would have been pushed into a surgery that I know believe is too restrictive for a decent quality of life. I'm so grateful to all you.

Here's a complete list of reputable DS surgeons.  As you will see, none are from the state of Kansas.  Looks like you found a fraud.  Like he said "don't believe everything you read"...he's NOT a DS surgeon. This list is from duodenalswitch.com which prides itself in compiling the names of DS surgeons based on patient reviews and investigations.  They do NOT pay for their names to be on this list.  It is compiled so that people like us don't get taken by the type of surgeons you ran into yesterday.  I'm so sorry that you had to sit through two hours of debating with someone who, ultimately, didn't have your best interest at heart. Thank you for the list. I had checked it out before but thought it must not be updated to include the Kansas surgeons. There is a surgeon in Texas not on the list that I am going to meet in July. Should I only go to a doctor on this list, do you think?  I appreciate your help.
