Magnesium Hinders Calcium Absorption?

Hello All;

Just doing some reading on vitamin uses, deficiencies, sources, etc. and saw a statement that surprised me.

Magnesium competes with calcium for absorption and can cause a calcium deficiency if calcium levels are already low.

Has anyone heard this?  It was my understanding that it aided calcium absorption and it was a good idea to take 1/2 dose with each full dose of calcium (or 250Mg with each 500Mg of calcium).  Dealing with these leg cramps, I have been increasing my magnesium and was wondering if I should try 500/500 mag/calc when I saw this statement.  Thoughts, anyone?

Still going to take mag citrate with calcium citrate. Maybe they're talking about mag oxide?

I was taught that Magnesium helps Calcium absorption , too.  I take it 1:1 , but looking at DivaJojo's o

post, maybe I should bump it down to 0.5:1

I have taken it for years.  After my surgery switched to Citrate.  My calcium & magnesium were fine preop.

Odd... Calcium needs Magnesium & Vit K in order to be absorbed as well as Vit D has to be in the normal range

I take mag citrate with every (6-8) doses of Calcium Citrate per day.  I take 3 doses of D too.  My calcium, pth, magnesium have all been excellent.  My D is around 50 but that is acceptable even though I would rather it be higher.

Thanks for the replies, folks.  It struck me as odd when I saw it.
