Sue, you are SERIOUSLY low in D, and B12 (without lab reference numbers it's hard to see the others.

Vit D should be between 35 and 100 and for us, the closer to 100 the better.

As to B12, anything UNDER 400 is critical...you need sublingual or a shots to get that up ASAP. Low B12 can cause permenant neurological damage...called peripheral neuropathy.

Be careful with the B Complex...just up the ones individually that are low as B6 that is too high can cause the same permanent neurological issues.

Hi Liz,

I won't be able to get shots for B12 until I see the endocrinologist.  I will have to take oral B12 for now.  Could you suggest a dosage?  I will also start on the Vit D as well.  The lab results suggests I should be between 75-250 nmol/L I am at 39.  They don't give me lab test numbers just the name of the test and the results and the units.  I am concerned (as was mr Dr.) that my parathyroid hormone was high 8.9 pmol/L where the range should be 16.-6.9.  That combined with the high creatine kinase of 518 U/L when the range is 29-165.  I did some inquiry on this and it suggested sighs of heart attack or stroke.  I am getting quite scared here.  Don't know if these numbers have anything to do with the DS.  All I need is more stress.  I'll just have to wait for the specialist.

Thanks for the help.  I am sticking with the diet hoping this will help.

I see Michelle (vitalady) is helping and since she knows FAR more than I ever will..listen to her. In fact, except for the side effects of too little B12 and too much B6, I don't know how they all work together. But since FOR ME, neither has been an issue, I jus****ch my B12 and B6 numbers to make sure they stay in line.

I agree with Liz and your ferritin is getting low.  You want it to come in closer to 200. If you see iron serum you want that one to be between 80 and 100. You want hemoglobin greater than 12 and hematocrit greater than 36.  You might want to follow up or get a referral to a hematologist.

Hi Gina,

My hematocrit is at .41 L/L the suggested levels are .35-.45 on the lab report.  My hemoglobin is 133 g/L with suggested range being 120-160 so I guess it is getting low as well.  I have been on iron before my DS so maybe I should get back to it again.  I am afraid to try to much on my own in case I make matters worse.  My Dr. has referred me to an endocrinologist but who knows how long that could take.

Thanks for the help.

Ah, I apologize. I don't have the Canadian conversions in my head.  Let's keep it simple and say you want your ferritin close to the top of the range, your hematocrit top of the range and your hemoglobin top-middle of the range.

To bring my saggy levels up I took 300mg of Vitalady's Tender iron in the mid afternoon and also 2 Proferrin ES, split in 2 pieces, at bedtime. My iron levels are pretty awesome now but it took a good year at that level of supplementation to get them there.

I see Michelle, Vitalady, has asked about what you take now. That will help her give you good advice.

Good luck!

what is your vites regimen now? And how faithful to it are you?

Hi Michelle,

My regimen now is almost nil to be honest.  I didn't think in mattered anymore.  My weightloss stopped 50lb short of my goal, I regained 40lbs and now have been on a diet for the last 9 weeks with a weightloss of only 6 lbs.  I really expected my lab results to be worse than they are.  I don't think my DS  is performing as it should.  Honestly, I don't know what to think anymore.

Thanks

NIL?  your vitamin regime is nil and you thought it didn't matter anymore???  YOU HAVE BEEN SURGICALLY ALTERED.... some of that is permanent with the DS... like the partial gastrectomy.  You have probably about 2 INCHES of duodenum with a DS, not the 10 - 12 inches non surgically altered people have.  You don't have the enzymes coming from your gallbladder any longer to break down your food to get the nutrients if you had that removed as part of your DS.  You have a common channel with no jejunum with its specialized cells to pull nutrients needed to LIVE.

YOU are courting death by not taking care of yourself.  YOU aren't performing as YOU should, don't blame the DS.  YOUR BODY BELIEVES IT IS BEING STARVED and you are doing it to yourself...

YOU need to be responsible.  nuff said???
