Travel Grant Denied

I got denial letters today for my and my husband's travel grants.  Go figure, apparently there's a surgeon in Thunder Bay who could have done the surgery.  I phoned them and said that the last time I looked it was more than 100k to Hamilton, so she immediately admitted the error.  Now the assessment centre has to send in some additional info.  I've only waited 8 weeks already, so perhaps by Christmas I'll get the cheques!!  They're only human, mistakes do get made, but because there are so many of us going to Hamilton from Thunder Bay, I suggested they brush up on the bariatric registry and its coverage.  It was a friendly conversation, and the lady on the phone was  very nice, however . . . one more hassle I could have done without.

Had RNY surgery July 22/11, St. Joe's Hamilton, with the awesome Dr. Scott Gmora.  Had abdominoplasty August 2/13, Scarborough, with equally awesome Dr. Michael Kreidstein.

Hi

Did you have multiple trips to your WLS centre? And did you submit a travel grant for each trip? Or just your surgery?

I have recently just submitted mine, for 4 trips pre-op, and was curious, as there is nothing mentioned in the "ouline" for the grant about *numerous* trips... lol..

I sent on in for each trip I went to Toronto... not just for the surgery:)

I only had the one trip for surgery.  I would assume that if your centre required you to make 4 trips, then they should be covering 4 trips.

I was sure shocked, but whoever was helping me was very good and assured me that it would be taken care of.  And I'm sure Ron will educate them - the office said that they do not want any of their patients having to worry about this and having a hassle over it  Go Ron!!

You said they have a surgeon in TBay now is that true or did she make a mistake? Does that mean that we could potentially have it done in TBay? Well I am glad it was just an error for the grant being denied, what a bummer for the wait though. Take care

No, there is no surgeon in Thunder Bay who can do this surgery.  They were mistaken, or made an assumption, but whatever it was, they were wrong.  Hopefully we'll have our own surgeon in a few years as the program expands.
