I eat carbs.  BUT....I try and stay away from simple carbs.  Crackers are my downfall.  I can eat them all day long.  They're slider foods and dont keep me full and satisfied so I can easily eat thousands of calories worth of crackers.  I havent...yet.  That's why I try and stay away from them.

I get my carbs mostly from fruit, veggies and whatever's in the dairy products I eat.

I'd like to follow up on Simona's point about where "carbs" are.

I, for example, make my own protein shakes using protein powders mixed in skim milk - because I like the taste better, it's less expensive, and the milk boosts the protein in the shake even more.

BUT, 1 cup of lactose free skim milk also has 13 gms of carbs as well as 9 gms of protein in its 90 calories.  I think of these as neutral carbs - not bad / not good - but they have to be counted in my total daily carb intake if I want to maximize my weight loss by keeping my eating within the 1/3 protein / 1/3 carbs / 1/3 fat guidelines.  So, I've had to adjust the way I think about dairy  - it's not just a protein or a fat source.

This is why I find FitDay.com so incredibly useful.  It tracks this all for me, and by using the customized food option I can set up what I'm actually eating (volume, nutritional info I get off labels, etc.) to see how my day goes.

Usually beofre dinner I input my food to see if I'm on track, and choose my night meal to keep the day in line - which in my case usually means eat even more protein and keep the carbs of any kind to a minimum (haha).  This is when you do begin to feel like a "carboholic", because it does become a focus .

I am on maintenance right now.
I love carbs, complex, simple, whatever.
and usually i stick to fruits and vegi's, but this last month i ate so many BAD carbs, that i'm doing a purge.
I'm still having 1/2 a banana in my morning shake but for the most part almost ZERO carbs over the next 4 days to cleanse my system and take off some excess pounds gained.

IT's a good way to kick start a stall or  take off those unwanted (christmas pounds).

I tried to stay away from simple carbs while i was losing, but needed to introduce more once i hit goal. Trial and error.

I think you've been given some great tips here.

Best of luck.

Lots of good advice above...

I also found carbs confusing when I started out so I made sure to ask my nutritionist. Remember that we can only speak from our own experiences, and your medical team should be high on your list of places to get info.

I, like most above, avoid simple carbs...too much volume for not enough in return. My pouch is prime real estate, so a piece of bread is a waste of space as far as I am concerned. I certainly have never been told that carbs are unnecessary and in fact was chastised (gently) for not eating enough fruit.

I eat carbs but like others, small amounts and after my protein.  In the morning however I eat a piece of toast with either peanut butter or tuna on it because it is quick and I don't have time to eat.  I will have cheese or something as a snack later.  But if I'm eating a meal I never have bread, and only small amounts of rice or pasta or other carbs.  Whenever I go to meetings or conferences at work, it seems like their lunch of choice is always sandwiches.  When they offer buns and meat separate, I just take meat and cheese and salad.  When they offer the sandwich already made, I end up taking it all apart at my table and only eating the insides!  LOL

I can tolerate anythign as well.  And I do eat some bad carbs when I am having a "treat' but I try to do that as rarely as possible.  If I fill up on good things then it leaves no room or craving for the bad things.  I will occasionally cut out all or most carbs for a few days if I want to kick start my weight loss or reverse some damage (like if I had an over-indulgent weekend)
