Vitamin k

Did anyone have to take vitamin k before surgery? My surgeon never told me about taking it? Anyone else have to or does it depend on clinics??

Hi.

My wife has to take it two weeks and then again two days before surgery.  Her center is Toronto Western but her surgery is with Dr. Aarts at Toronto East General Hospital.  Her surgery is on the 20th of March.

I am at st joe in Toronto an my surgeon fr. Lindsay never mentioned or told me too...... I am goin to call tommorow just in case my surgery is Tuesday!!!! steph

 Typically they'll do your bloodwork to see what you are deficient in before surgery. Official want to get your levels somewhat normal before surgery.  So not every one would be deficient in it or required to take it

My surgery was with Dr. Aarts and she prescribed it to me as well pre-surgery.

The only centre that does this for all patients is Hamilton, otherwise it just depends on the practise of the surgeon. The reason it is prescribed is because optifast does not have Vitamin K in it. Given the importance of Vitamin K in blood clotting, I guess there is a concern about developing a deficiency right before surgery. From what I've read though it would take at least several weeks, months even, of a diet completely lacking in Vitamin K to cause problems. I'm sure the docs who don't prescribe it are not taking any chances, it's probably more that the surgeons that do it have had a problem at some point in the past, or are just super, extra prudent. If you're concerned though, look at your multivit and  check to see if it has K in it, that's another way to get it.

I have had my surgery on Feb 16th and I had to take the Vitamin K vial and it had to be orally.  I went t Guelph for my surgery and it went great.

I have to take the vitamin k on sunday (surgery on Wed) and shoppers is saying i have to do an injection that you cant take it orally...where did you go to fill your prescription?

The surgeon is the one who told me to take it orally and the drug store had to follow her orders so i put it in my opti shake.  Could not taste it then.
