Dump waiting to happen?
Hi everyone,
I am pre-op now and keep hearing people call something a "dump waiting to happen" I asked the NUT about it and she simply said that it was an item with either too much sugar or too much fat or both...when I pressed her for what actually constitutes too much she said it was personal....
so now I ask...
what do you find would be a "dump waiting to happen"? How many grams of carbs or sugars or fat or whatever?
Thanks!

Hi there
This is a difficult question because it is really personal to each of us. Some can eat all the sugar and fat they want and never dump. Some dump on very little amounts of sugar.
Keeping sugar under 2 grams at the beginning helps, but then again you may not be a dumper.
I had my surgery 6 1/2 years ago and have only dumped once. If I eat too much sugar I don't feel so good, but I don't dump
Maybe some others on here can share their experiences with you.
Take care

You will be given a limit in your class - it's typically 5grams of sugar or under.
You'll get one for fat grams too.
You want to stick to your guidelines as much as possible after surgery. You can prevent
dumping most of the time. Sugar is the enemy. Sugar is usually what made us fat.
A Dairy Queen blizzard for instance is a dump waiting to happen. LOL

I am usually fine with most foods. Rice is a complete no for some reason. And apparently Butter...yes I know we shouldn't have it. But I barbqued carrots in Butter for the Fam this week and not thinking ate a few....
And the result was not pleasant...Tried steamed carrots later in the week they were fine so I assumed it was the fatty butter that did me in.
Don't know if this is dumping or rejection or what you call it but once my body had purged all it could I felt better.
So it's kind of personal but when it happens or if it happens you will know.

Dumping =heart racing, clamminess, nausea, shakes etc. may include diarrhea for some.
Rejection (throwing up) = not chewing enough, eating too fast or too much or pouch cannot tolerate.
Two different things.

Hmmm..maybe it was rejection. Either way certainly gave me a kick in the arse to be more careful and that I can't randomly sample while cooking...
*agreeing with Dawn*
I didn't understand the sensation of dumping until it actually happened to me, and when it did (which btw happened as a reaction to SF Chapman's ice cream, and then later by a Premier Protein Shake- something to do with sugar alcohols for me), it was a completely different feeling. For me it is very much a lower abdomen thing. I get reall bad cramps down low in my belly, have extreme sweating and nausea (though never throw up), my heart races, and I get the "scoots". Terribly ugly thing- the whole dumping syndrome. Ugh.

i dumped once, early out on watermelon.
i think i was 2 monthsout, ate too much watermelon.
had to run to the bathroom twice and then i was so exhausted, i had to sleep, slept for 4 hours afterwards. so i didn't get the sweats or heart racing, but the cramps and exhaustion.
different for everyone, but since then, i haven't dumped, i still eat too much watermelon or fruit in general but no ill effects, however; i try and stay away from processed sugars as much as possible. Sugar alcohol make me feel yukky.
