What can you NOT tollerate after your surgery?

 Hey all,
I just had my bypass on tuesday at 9am. I am home and starting my after surgery journey. On my information quest, I am wondering what everyone's most non tollerated foods are? Spices, chocolate, red meat, anything and everything:)
Also any tips to keep up my fluid intake? Can't seem to make myself drink enough.
thanks all!

good for you!! glad to see that things went well.

1. you shouldnt really try to tolerate chocolate, that should be on your list of things "not to even attempt"

2. I can tolerate anything and everything. Nothing's given me any problem at all.

3. set a timer or something, to remind yourself to drink. Always have a bottle of water with you, no matter where you are. (and by 'bottle', i don't mean bottled water, i mean a refillable one. i'm a huge tap water advocate. There's no need to drink bottled water, except for convenience. )

I can tolerate everything but that wasnt always the case. When I moved to solid foods I really couldnt eat chicken, eggs or fish.

Now at 9 months out, I can eat those things. But I'm turned off by the thought of veggies. Those have yet to work their way into my diet on a regular basis.

As for the water...I used a water bottle and carried it everywhere! I was actually okay drinking normal amounts of water early out.

I am just over a year out and I still can't eat bread or rice or egg yolks..makes me sooooo sick!..  To much sugar makes me dump too which isn't a bad thing so this way I know to stay away from it!

and yes I agree ALWAYS have a bottle of water with you, think of it like your VISA card, never leave home without it!

I wish you all the best on your journey!

I'm like Monica, I can tolerate anything and everything. Early out chicken made me nauseous so I just avoided it for a while now nothing bothers me.

I would do some serious soul searching and make a list of foods that got you into "trouble" so to speak and avoid them at all cost. In my case it was chips so chips are forbidden in my house. Making the list really helped me identify what my problem foods were /are.

Glad your surgery went well for you and welcome to the Bench!!

That's a good tip, Ann. Chips will be on my list for sure!

I'm only 3 weeks out but nothing has bothered me so far. Except for cauliflower once - made me a bit burpy but I'm not sure if it was the actual cauliflower or one of the high protein things we mixed into it cuz I haven't been burpy the last two times I ate it.

Monica, I'm wondering about your chocolate comment. Why not even try it? Is it the sugar or the caffeine or both? I don't really like chocolate all that much (except I usually want a little bit once a month) so no big loss for me if that's a no-no forever. Just wonderin!

Thanks ladies!

I'd say to avoid trying chocolate or anything else that is high in sugar as long as possible. I'm not decided if its worst case scenario you dump or worst case scenario you don't dump from it. Regardless eating sweets is not going to help you to your weight loss goals.

My food intolerances are white pasta (i barf), dry chicken (see comment about white pasta). I find anything deep fried makes me queasy. Oh and baby carrots. Despite how much i chew them they sit in my pouch and cause unpleasantness - i've decided that I might as well write them off the list which is too bad .. other than the fact they give me wicked stomach aches I really like them and the crunch they provide.

As for the fluids .. you might have heard this before but sip sip sip constantly other than around meal times

i stay away from anything high in sugar. i just don't want to know if I can handle it. I rather think if I have it I will be sick. I also stay away from any deep fried food. Try a french fry once and thought I was going to die. Can not do deep fried which is fine with me.
To get my water in I use crystal light. If it was not for crystal light I would never ge****er into me.

ONe of the pieces of best advice I have found from on here- and trust me there has been a ton of great advice- is just stay away from those things you know you should avoid.  By foods you should avoid I mean the high fat high calorie empty foods, chips candy chocolate cookies white bread etc etc.  The surgery itself is one part of this.  We must work hard to make it sucessful.  You can have RNY and still be obese, but why bother having surgery if that is what you are going to do.

I do not think about what I cannot eat, its rather what I can eat and I eat mindfully.  I make sure I am eatting for high test fuel rather than pleasure.  Eatting is what we do to live not what we do for fun.  That is what got us where we are.

In regard to fluid-you just need to do it simple as that.  Find whatever works to remind yourself but at the end of the day just drink your litre or 2 a day.  If you dont drink enough you will be unwell and have other complications.

Okay, I think I get it now.

You're saying why tempt fate by trying to tolerate things that are bad for you or not recommended anyway.

Right? Gotcha.
