I did something yukky with my protein shake
Haven't had enough protein lately, hardly any today, and since I was so cold I thought I'd experiment and try making a hot chocolate protein drink. Shook up my shake (I use milk), then nuked it. Yeah, I don't recommend you try it - it got all curdly and kind of gross. It tasted just fine, but the texture in my mouth was just bad. Down the drain.
Had RNY surgery July 22/11, St. Joe's Hamilton, with the awesome Dr. Scott Gmora. Had abdominoplasty August 2/13, Scarborough, with equally awesome Dr. Michael Kreidstein.

Nope, can't nuke the powder or presumabaly a premade shake(been there, done that !).
I still use shakes all the time and prefer them "warm", so what I do is put cold milk, my protein powder, and 1 cup coffee (hot) all in a blender in that order and buzz it. It doesn't crudify this way, and is warm. This is my breakfast everyday.

Sorry about that! I hope you were still able to get your protein in another way!
I've done it before like that without problems. I use syntrax protein powder, blend with milk and my other additives (I still use ice cubes when I do this because I like the frothy texture it gives it) in the blender and then pour a quarter of it into a mug, microwave on high for about two minutes, stirring every 30 seconds and adding in a bit more shake each time. No curdles or lumps for me, so maybe try this method?
The other thing I've heard doing is mixing everything but the powder that you would normally put into the protein hot chocolate and microwaving that to your desired temperature. While that's in the microwave, mix the protein powder with a bit of cold water to form a slurry (think the consistency of like maple syrup), then when your drink is hot, pour this in to the hot drink and stir. I've heard this helps eliminate lumps too.
Hope these ideas help!

Good suggestions everyone - I'll give them a try. I really love my 25-cal hot chocolate instead of coffee, but still need a protein boost as I'm not getting enough.

I make protein hot chocolate all the time. I mix my protein powder with a little almond milk in the mug until it's all creamy and the lumps are gone. Then add the rest of the almond milk to the mug.
Not this is the key part, do not nuke for a long time at once.
I nuke for 1 minute, then in 30 second increments until it's done. Generally about 2 minutes in my microwave.
My hot chocolate comes out very creamy this way. I also add a splash of SF syrups to change up the flavours. Almond Rocca with Vanilla Protein Power and Chocolate Almond milk is AWESOME! :))
