The general guideline some use is 40-30-30, meaning percentages.  40% protein, 30% carbs, 30% fats

Having said that, during my losing phase my protein was definitely higher and my carbs were lower.

How do you calculate that??? I am stymied.

1 gram of protein is 4 cal

1 gram carb is 4 cal

1 gram fat is 9 cal

For a 900 cal diet

Protein 40% of 900 = 360 cal \ 4cal = 90 grams

Carb 30% of 900 = 270 cal\ 4 cal = 68 grams

Fat 30% of 900 = 270 cal\ 9 cal = 30 gram

Alchohol is a carb but is 7 cal per gram

Debra the only way I have been able to actually translate those percentages into what I am actually going to eat is using myfitnesspal.com and plug in my meal plan and if the percentages are skewed in the favour of carbs or fat, I cut them back and increase the protein.  More detailed calculations are beyond my feeble mental abilities!

Thanks Ian, I figured out that I needed to set up fitness pal with custom plan.

How do you change the personal setting in fitnesspal. I know how to change the categories etc - but not the actual numbers. Any idea?

when you open it, do you see a bunch of icons along the bottom?  There is "more"?  click on it and you'll find "edit profile", I think what you want is there, it lets you edit all kinds of goals and current sizes etc.  Hope that is it.  kiss

I use fitday.com, it calculates it for me. :)
