Just waiting! Who do you tell?

New to the board, has really helped to read your stories and advice.  I am waiting to hear from the surgeon, hoping to set a date soon.  In the meantime, wondered if you had any advice on what to tell people at work.  I have of course told my immediate family and close friends but not sure who or how much to tell my colleagues especially since no date yet and don't want to jinx it. Seems I've been waiting for ever.  I guess patience is a virtue in this process.

TO me it was a very private decision so I told very few people. In fact most of my extended family still do not know. Everyone is different--my girlfriend told everyone....so It comes down to your own comfort level.good luck in your journey

It is different for everyone.

I told my family, and a few friends.  Once I actually have the surgery, I will tell more people.

Before surgery I told my family & my employer re time off.  After surgery I told anyone who asked how I lost weight.

very individual thing.  I can imagine some work situations where it would be best to only talk to the main HR person a few weeks pre op, others leaving them more time.  It can take a while, best not to announce it too far in advance maybe?

As everyone mentioned each person is different.

I told my immediate family, my husband's family does not know (and I probably won't say anything to them).  My close friends know.

I have very supportive people at work, I am lucky that way.  They know I'm trying to loose weight so they are cheering me on without knowing exactly what the end game is.

My manager knows, she's my cheerleader.... She's actually the person who told me about the program.  We had lunch one day, while I was on mat leave, and I told her how wonderful she looked... she said that she was doing the Optifast program.

I went to my doctor as soon as I could and sent in my referral shortly afterward.

If i could do it over here is what i would do. I would tell no one at first till I did it and figured out what and to who I planned to tell.

I told several people before and then after decided i wanted the credit for the hard work and active lifestyle I am living and that once some people knew about the surgery they gave all the credit to the surgery. It should not bother me but it did. My mom insisted on telling my story to everyone. I felt outed. I weight lift three times a week, do yoga twice a week, swim twice, skate bike or power walk another three times a week. My kids are loving the activities.

Now I am more secure and am telling those "I" want to how I did it.

I guess the issue is one of boundaries as well as credit for the work i am doing. LOL

I'm telling everyone because I am already trimming down and while it looks better... it makes those in my world nervous to see fluctuations in my weight and size. I've been sick  or had a scare one too many times so now it is open season.

It started with my nearest and dearest... so hubby, best friends, etc. and spiraled from there to extended people. *shrug*

I have had NO bad reactions. I have had to explain what I am having done... I told the SERT at my daughters school so if there is any fall out there it is handled. I finally told my GP a couple weeks ago. Etc.

it is your own preference...

Hi Riding Fan....I think it is a very individual thing and what feels good for your comfort level.

I have told very few people, as sometimes you get way too much advice from people. I have learnt

from past experiences, sometimes the less people know the better.  But you need to do what feels

right for you and your situation broken heart

Thanks for all the replies and helpful advice to consider.  I agree that a few important people needed to be told like my husband and kids, and a couple of close girlfriends.  Sometimes i have had very surprising reactions which contributed to my own considerations and really enforced my determination to succeed.  Will have to follow my own motto  and "Enjoy the ride!" every day.
