Finally got a date for surgery
Because I'm a "lightweight", with a BMI of 38, and because I'm 65 years old, I got a lot of resistance from the power-that-be at the hospital. But I had my last appointment with Dr. Hagan (HRRH) and after some discussing he has agreed to do the surgery..
I'm scheduled for April 16, 2013, with the previous three weeks on Optifast.
So, I've got a few weeks to say goodbye to some of my favourite foods, and then I'll be going ahead.
Congratulations on your date!
I'm waiting for my surgery date, too, after having been in the Ottawa system since March 2011. I'm expecting a date in late February/early March.
I'm age 63, but with a higher BMI than yours. The surgeon made a point of telling me that because of my age, the surgery is five times more dangerous than for someone in their 40s. After discussion, and it's all statistics, anyway, we agreed that my risks of dying without surgery are still greater than the risks I'm taking with it.
With any luck, our surgery dates will be close. Wheee!
Way to go and my very best wishes.

Well, with a higher BMI you should qualify easier...
One hospital person said, "You could lose 40- 50 pounds with another weight loss method and not risk the surgery".
Well screw that... if another "weight loss method" worked for me, I might do that...
I found a actuarial calculator that said at my current weight I would live to 83 and with 100 lbs lighter I'd live to 85.
So WLS only gives me 2 years but it also gives me a quality of life for the next 20 years that is a lot better than it is now.
I'm not really worried about getting through the surgery...HRRH and Hagan have excellent reputations, and some of my support group in Peterborough recommended him, so I'm confident that I'll be just fine,

I had Dr. Hagen - and I just had a "6" in front before the surgery. Everything went wonderful - no complications whatsoever.
Best of luck - but I have to say that I don't agree with your sentence: "So, I've got a few weeks to say goodbye to some of my favourite foods",... I know some do not have a problems with it - I do
