Hey guys,

I have a really weird question but i have been hearing mixed things about so I wanted to ask the pro's. That's you guys.

Is it true that if you don't pass gas in the hospital after your RNY they don't release you?

Don't know if all the centres are the same but TWH does let you go home as long as you're moving, and are taking in and outputting water.  They like to hear you passing some gas or having BMs, but I didn't and they let me go.

I went through Ottawa and they were more concerned with my lack of peeing...kept pumping fluids into my IV until I felt like I would burst! But it worked, and I went home right on schedule!

I had a VSG at TWH and they released me even though I hadn't passed any gas and I was in so much pain I could not walk and had to be sent home via ambulance. I think it mostly depends on the hospital and how full it is while you're there. If they need your bed, they will likely discharge you.

that's the way it is at HRRH. Passing gas is the best indicator that your bowels are working properly. There is a risk of your bowels "freezing up" after being manipulated during surgery, and this is an absolutely necessary function.
