What a brave and important step you have made for yourself, Nicole. Surprisingly, it is a big deal. Defriending someone is never easy, but when it is family, it is even harder. 

I do not really know your situation, but I know exactly how it feels to have someone you love and care for so much be negative and say hurtful things. I only hope that one day I will have the same courage as you and take myself out of this painful, unnecessary situation.
